Every Tom Dick And Harry Has A Domain Name
What's in a domain name?
Your business. What your business is about. How people will see your business. Whether or not people will opt to do business with you. All that, in your domain name.
Domain names are important because it is what people will initially look up even before they enter your website. One glance is all it takes for visitors to either enter your site or ignore it totally.
Why not create your own creative and catchy domain name instead of buying that first available name you saw online? Sounds difficult? Not really. Below are some pointers to guide you in getting the name that will define you and your business for years to come.
Keywords.
What is your business about? What are the keywords your business should fall into?
These are the questions to ask. Do some research online and list down what keywords best describe your business. The name of your site should be related to what your domain will be. You will make it easier for your readers to know what you are offering.
Assume that visitors are always in a hurry. So the best thing to do is give it to them upfront ...
... using your domain name.
Length.
All the short names are already taken. But that doesn't mean there is nothing unique left for you.
Longer domain names are fine. Not very long though. What matters is that it makes sense and is catchy at the same time. Put yourself in the position of your readers. Would you be enticed to go into the website when you see that domain name?
Eye-catcher. One-of-a-kind. Appealing. Your domain name should have all these, no matter how short or long it is.
Extension.
.co.uk? .com?
The golden rule in domain extension is that you use the local or country extension of your target audience. If your business is international, then .com is the best option. People type in this extension automatically.
Check first if you are allowed to use a certain extension. You would not want to lose your traffic potential just because you did not use the proper domain extension.
Hyphen.
Hyphen in domain names is not only easy on the eyes; it also makes the words easier to read. Those are some of the reason why there are hyphenated domain names.
Some people forget to use hyphen when they typed. Be sure to emphasize its use on your domain so people will remember the next time they want to visit your website.
Use all your imaginative juices to come up with the domain name for your business. The pointers are already laid out for you. What now? Go create.
