Phulkari literally means working with flowers. It is an embroidery technique using floral themes, which is widely practised by rural women in the Punjab region. Earlier any sort of embroidery was referred to as Phulkari, now it is restricted to embroidery on shawls and Odhani / Odhni (head scarves).
Phulkari and its larger version Bagh is generally meant to embroider floral designs on clothes worn for special occasions like bridal attire, wedding salwar kameez, chuddidar kameez and sarees. Tradition had it that girls practised it to get their wedding trousseau readied before their marriage with no commercial aspect involved. Today it is also stitched by professional people for the market. The practice of giving away a Phulkari and Bagh to the would-be bride by the family and relatives has come into vogue.
Phulkari involves putting a darn stitch using silken thread or floss called Pat which is quite costly, on the wrong side of a coarse cotton cloth called Khaddar. Nowadays cost considerations have restricted this to darning only on the front or right side of the cloth, by many families. This darn stitch is so beautifully ...
... done that the cloth achieves a striking effect. Phulkari is distributed floral embroidery over the fabric whereas Bagh leaves sarees hardly any space of the base fabric visible. The end portion of the pallu or pallav have separate panels of exquisite designs on the phulkari fabric. Phulkari is extremely intricate considering that the themes are done from memory and the counting of stitches is paramount, where a misplaced stitch could spoil the design.

Red and its shades being most preferred for being considered auspicious for festivals, marriages and rites, other colours too like brown, black, blue and white are also used. Phulkari themes are generally objects used and encountered in day-to-day life. Wheat and barley stalk is the most common motif found. The design in a phulkari is supposed to represent the deeper emotions and sentiments of the woman who does the phulkari. Status of a family is indicated through the weaving stitch, the pattern and the number of phulkaris prepared in a family. The darn stitch is the most widely prevalent for Phulkari, though Herringbone stitch, Holbein stitch, running stitch and buttonhole stitch are occasionally used.

The Geographical Indication (GI) status was awarded after a legal imbroglio in 2011 to the states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan to use the word Phulkari for their traditional products like shawls and Odhnis and other related aspects to the art.
