It has relatively mild or periodic symptoms that may improve on their own within weeks or months with simple home TMD treatment. TMD can be just an irritation, pain or it can be a life-altering difficulty if not diagnosed or treated on time. Temporomandibular joint disorders are problems affecting the jaw joint usually pain or reduced movement of the joint. There are various causes but mostly it is not a serious condition, and often improves with simple treatments. When it's less severe certain precautions can work to cure the problem such as eating soft foods, applying ice or moist heat, and avoiding extreme jaw movements like wide yawning, loud singing, and gum-chewing. The pain usually subsides with time and these simple cares at home. Very small pieces cut food should be added to meal so that it can be chewed easily. Examples include yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, fruit smoothies, cooked vegetables or fruits. For diagnosing the problem full face X-rays is very helpful.

Panoramic X-rays show a broad view of the jaws, teeth, sinuses, nasal area, and temporomandibular joints. These X-rays ...
... do show problems such as impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, cysts, solid growths, infections, and fractures. These full face X-rays allow the dentist to make sure other problems aren't causing the TMD symptoms. MRI, CT and ACT are another way to detect the trouble. Once the dentist diagnose the problem either they can start treatment at their own or may decide to send the patient to an oral surgeon or maxillofacial surgeon for further care and treatment. Basic TMD treatment includes apply moist heat or cold packs, eat soft foods, take medications, wear a splint or night guard.

TMJ acts like a sliding hinge, It connects jawbone to the skull. TMJ disorders can cause pain in jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. Arthritis is one cause of TMJ symptoms. It can result from an injury or from grinding the teeth at night. The pain eventually goes away with little or no treatment. Some people however need treatment of TMJ, if showing long term treatment and significant development in pain. Determining the cause of a TMJ problem is important, because it is the cause that guides the treatment of TMJ. It can vary from simple, self-care to complicated surgical procedures. It is very important when seeking TMD treatment that the patient exhausts all conservative options before moving on to invasive treatments.
