It is normal and commonly find as a habit in person. But when done regularly it can damage the teeth or cause various health complications like headaches, jaw joint damage and problematic changes in the muscles of the jaw etc. Teeth grinding is also known as bruxism, It can happen during the day, as well as at night when people are unconscious and have no awareness of it. Signs and symptoms of bruxism may include aching teeth, Increased tooth sensitivity, grinding sound while sleeping which may loud enough to awaken your sleep partner, chronic facial pain, or aching stiffness in the jaws while chewing particularly during breakfast.

Clenching of teeth causes generally at night and also affects people when they are awake, although this is more likely to be clenching the teeth and jaw, rather than grinding. Most people do it subconsciously while they are concentrating. It is very normal but very problematic and harder to control specially sleep related bruxism. During sleep the force of clenching the teeth can be up to six times greater than normal waking biting pressure. Other key symptoms include anxiety, depression, ...
... eating disorders, headache, sensitivity in the teeth and insomnia. When the teeth do not line up or come together properly the habit of clenching the teeth develop in the individual.

Most of the cases it is seen that people who grind their teeth often also bite their nails, they chew their pens and pencils, or chew their lips or the inside of their cheeks. Teeth grinding can have a variety of psychological and physical causes. In many cases, it has been linked to stress, but it can also simply be the body's reaction to the teeth being wrongly alligned. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. Sometimes, people grind their teeth without it causing any symptoms or problems. But, regular and persistent teeth grinding can cause pain and discomfort in jaw and it can wear down the teeth. It also can be a result of the body's reaction. Severe brain injury can cause the habit of teeth grinding sometime. People can feel difficulty in jaw opening and closing. In rare cases, bruxism may be a side effect of some medicines that treat depression. These include Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline) and Paxil (paroxetine).
