What Is Sustainable Development?
It is no secret that we are facing a global crisis and that many concerned people and organizations are fighting to do something to stop the damage to the environment and the biosphere before it is too late. It is quite easy to be a little bit caring towards our surroundings and to ensure that we aren’t depleting the natural resources at an alarming rate. These natural resources which are limited in any given biosphere need to be restored periodically. So we should try to restore and reverse the damage to the environment and to minimize such damage while developing an area.
This process where the restoration is carried out along with the buildingdevelopment is called sustainable development. For instance, while constructing a building, to minimize its carbon footprint, you can opt for natural ventilation wherever possible. Even factories can manage with natural ventilation, unless heavy machinery is involved. Likewise you can cut down on your energy consumption by 70% just by opting for proper lighting systems, automated shading systems and spot lighting for areas where more light is required. There are many specialist ...
... lighting system providers who strive to minimize our impact on the environment.
Water and soil conservation is another area where everyone can make a difference. By stopping water waste, and by using soil-friendly farming techniques, we can reduce the toll on the environment. Many organizations and business houses are now involved in contributing to sustainable development, by setting up pilot projects and helping to create awareness among the public.
Wipro is one such company that insists on sustainable development in all its buildings and factories. Wipro’s commitment to improving and preserving the conditions in our living spaces doesn’t stop there. In the last five years, it has introduced a lot of Green Building Initiatives and has won 19 LEED awards, which is awarded in recognition of eco-friendly construction, by the USGBC.
Wipro is committed to improving the situation at the grass roots level and so has tied up with thirty educational institutions in order to educate the young minds about the importance of water and soil conservation and sustainable farming and building methods. Wipro also believes in proper waste management in order to minimize environmental pollution. 32% of all water used in Wipro’s campuses is recycled water for landscaping and sanitation. Two of the largest campuses have been turned into bio-diversity zones. Out of the rainwater harvested in all the Wipro facilities, 75% is used to recharge the ground water table, thereby significantly contributing to water conservation.
Once you recognize that we live in a world with finite resources, it is a no-brainer that we need to do all we can to preserve it for our children. When huge corporate entities like Wipro take a stand and make a commitment, the results are startling. Wipro is ready to take its commitment to the environment to the next level; rather than stopping with its own initiatives and educating the children, it is also empowering its suppliers to become eco-friendly. In a 360 degree initiative, it helps not just its employees and suppliers, but also its customers to live greener lives.
