Moving house is listed as one of life's most stressful events and it is easy to forget so many things and let the whole situation become a complete disaster. Here is a short guide to help you through this stressful period.

If, as part of your purchase price there are items that have been included it is a good idea to write yourself an inventory check-list. The inventory will detail the condition of the property and any of the contents that you have purchased as part of the deal. It is really very important that you are present when this is being checked in order to ensure that both parties agree with the observations made.

Although this may seem very formal it might be a good idea to sign the inventory if you are happy with the details noted and request a copy for your own records. If items are included within the purchase price remember to check on the quantity and indeed the condition of these items on arrival. Make sure they are what you expected. If there are any problems - it is vital to let the other party know straight away - try to settle this between you and hopefully not get your solicitor involved.

There ...
... are also a number of things that you can do prior to the day you move in. In an ideal world you should have your contract signed and have four weeks to prepare for the move. Unfortunately these days due to delays in surveys, mortgage offers, or with your purchasers or further down the chain sellers often don't know for sure if the move is actually taking place until what seems like the last minute.

In an ideal situation these are the arrangements you should make in your countdown to moving:

One month prior to your move:
Make a file to collect all documents in connection with the move in one place - this will really help you in the long term and is good practice for good housekeeping. Ask for a price quotation for your completion date from two or three reputable removal firms. Also get written confirmation that the removal firm you have chosen is fully insured. If you are currently living in rented accommodation make sure you let your existing landlord know you are moving out Contact telephone company to arrange for installation of phone line at new property. If you are having a local move it might be possible to retain your existing number, have you checked on the availability of broadband at your new property. Inform telephone, electric and gas companies and arrange to have meters read. This is very important. Most of the utility companies now have a department that deal superficially with house moves.

Two weeks prior to your move:
Inform the Post Office of new postal address and arrange for redirection of post after completion. A lot of people forget to do this and is the boom of many new house movers. Mail out change of address cards and don't forget to include bank, doctor, dentist, optician and vet. If your moving out of your existing area you will need to register with a new doctors and indeed dentist. Do not be surprised if these sometimes have waiting lists or if there are forms to complete in order to supply this information.

If you follow so of these tips then as the big day approaches you will have less to worry about.
