In a world that sets much store by physical appearances, it is no surprise that people go to great lengths to improve their appearance, if not change it altogether. Among the many aspects people want to improve in themselves is their smile because a great smile can do a lot of things, including get you what you want in life.

How many times have we heard or read about great smiles enabling us to score that dream job or that dream guy/girl? How many times have we been told that a great smile is a very effective as far as engaging people's attention and drawing them to you? Too many times perhaps but the thing is, everything you heard or read about is true. A great smile really does wonders for our life which is why having it has become more of a necessity.

Among the many methods that people opt for to improve their smiles is teeth whitening. There are many reasons why we should get our teeth whitened and it's not just because we want to look good, but we also want to feel good as well. As we age, the outer layer of our teeth's enamel gets worn down, revealing darker tissues underneath, which is at the center of the ...
... tooth around the nerve and blood vessels.

Our teeth can also start discoloring due to certain habits like smoking, drinking coffee, tea, red wine and other tooth-staining beverages. This can also be due to taking certain medications like tetracycline. In the old days, when your teeth became discolored, there was nothing you could do about it but these days, with the advent of teeth whitening, it just opens up a whole slew of other possibilities, with teeth whitening being just a start.

The fact that teeth whitening isn't as expensive and lasts about under an hour and can be done in the dentist's office are perhaps more reasons why people are going for it. These and the fact that it anybody can have it done unless they have an allergy to the bleaching product used or if you're pregnant and lactating but otherwise, you don't need to consult with a dentist before you can get it done-you just go ahead and have it done.

However, easy and convenient as teeth whitening may be, there are still some considerations you need to think about before you go ahead and do it. For one, you have to understand that side effects can occur like teeth sensitivity during the 24 hours following the procedure. This is usually relieved with pain relievers every six to eight hours if the pain gets too much. Also, if you happen to ingest a bit of the gel during the process, this can cause nausea or vomiting.

You should also realize that it is not a permanent procedure and that your teeth can become yellowish once more if you continue to ingest teeth-staining beverages or continue to smoke. Perhaps a silver lining to this cloud is the fact that you can always go for follow-up treatments that are done more quickly than the first time.

Another thing you need to consider before teeth whitening is the fact that the results will depend on the severity of your discoloration prior to having it done. Don't expect super white teeth when your teeth are discolored to the point that they seem grayish or brownish. The more you took care of your teeth prior to discoloration, the better the results will be.

As for the reasons why you should go for teeth whitening, if you haven't considered it before, one would be the fact that it can boost your confidence and self-esteem to new heights. You will be able to face the world better, talk to people more and basically just come out of your shell. You will also look younger and look better in pictures when you attend that wedding, high school reunion and other special events.

More importantly, you'll be able to express who you really are without any fears or worries about what people are going to say or think. You'll also be able to make a positive impression when it counts like during job interviews for instance. While a great smile may seem like something only vain people will want, nothing can be further from the truth. Your smile is like a business card that tells people how they can get to know you better.
