Most Common Sleep Disorders And How To Overcome Them
Many people don’t get enough sleep at night, but few ever stop and think that this lack of sleep could be caused by a sleep disorder. However, millions of people suffer from sleep disorders. The problem is that many people don’t realize they have a sleep disorder or don’t think that anything can be done about it. With the way many people’s schedules are these days, getting little sleep and relying on naps has almost become the norm. But missing out on a good night’s sleep can cause our bodies to become unhealthy and make us less efficient at work and school.
Having a restless night every now and then is not a cause for alarm. In fact, it’s fairly normal to be unable to sleep the night before a major event like a job interview, the beginning of a vacation, or your wedding. However, several sleepless nights in a row are certainly a cause for concern, and if you experience this, you should try to discover the cause of your sleeping disorder. You may want to even start a sleep journal to record these events:
How ...
... many total hours do you sleep at night?
How many of these hours are consecutive (without interruption)?
How often do you wake up during the night?
How long does it take you to get to sleep?
When do you go to sleep? Is it always close to the same time, or does your bedtime vary?
How many naps do you take a day? How long are they?
How do you feel while trying to go to sleepâ€anxious, nervous, etc.?
Do you often wake up in a panic or suddenly?
Do you feel incredibly groggy after waking or experience a lingering grogginess?
Do you toss and turn a lot or have trouble getting comfortable before going to sleep?
If you experience three or four of these symptoms, you may have a sleep disorder and may need to consult a doctor. While you may not have insomnia, which is a very severe sleep disorder, you may have a mild sleep disorder that can be cured fairly easily. It’s always best to treat the disorder as soon as you notice it; otherwise, you may find yourself very low on sleep.
It’s important to note that even if you do suffer from several things on the list, you may not have a horrible sleep disorder. Worrying that you do, in fact, may be the cause of your restlessness! Many people also find it hard to sleep when they’re going through a major upheaval in their lives. If you’ve lost your job, lost a loved one, or have just moved to a new location, it’s perfectly natural for your body’s sleep cycle to be disturbed. After a few weeks or so, however, things should settle down and you should start sleeping regularly again. Give it some time, but if you realize your lack of sleep is continuing, consult a professional.
