Madurai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu is the second largest city, located on the banks of river Vaigai, oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.It is also the oldest inhabited cities in the world and built around the well known Meenakshi temple and is divided into a number of quadrangular streets around the temple.Its Having good rail connectivity, the place has been an academic center of learning for culture, literature, art, music and dance for long back.

The tourist places for visitors interest are Meenakshi temple, Thirumalai Nayak Palace,Thirupparankundram Temple, Alagar Koil, Gandhi museum, Mariamman Teppakulam etc.Several tourist from not only but outside come to visit them.If we talk about Meenakshi temple,the most fascinating feature is its structure known as hall of thousand pillars.This has been an architectural masterpiece,and when its tapped one can hear musical notes from musical pillars. The glory of Madurai which was earlier went away has returned under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom.In earlier times the city was ruled by the Nayak Emperors. The place has been given different names like City of Junction , City of Jasmine,Temple city, and City of four junctions .Due to its active night life which is enjoyed by youngsters,its been given name as Thoonga Nagaram,means city that never sleeps. Apart from temples with good architectural designs and sculpures, the center of attraction has been the Chithrai Festival which takes place during mid April-May, during the Hindu month of Chithrai, when millions come for the carnival.The main events covered are flag hoisting,coronation of Meenakshi Amman,possession of Goddess,wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar,chariot and float procession.Another major thing is Jallikattu which coincides with Pongal festival in month of January.
