Hyderabad is one place where women get to see and buy a variety of sarees that come from various districts of Andhra

Pradesh. People from different parts of India come to Hyderabad to purchase them, as it is very convenient and saves a lot of

time and money, rather than going all the way to a specific district where only the sarees that are specific to that district are

available.

Varieties available in Hyderabad

We will find a huge variety in the city. Each variety has its own unique weaving pattern, style and method. The ones that are

specific to a particular city/town are named after the place.

1. Pochampally sarees

They are produced in Pochampally, a small village in the district of Nalgonda, 50 kms away from

which means tie and dye. They are hand woven, using silk and cotton fabric and are made in traditional and contemporary

designs. In Hyderabad, one ...
... can find them in areas like Chikkadpally, Dilsukhnagar, Hyderguda, Pot Market, etc.

2. Narayanpet sarees

They are manufactured in Narayanpet in Mahbubnagar district. The sarees have plain body with contrast border. The border is

made of zari (made of silk threads) with only lines on it. They are light in weight and easy to carry. You can find them in areas

like Nampally, Somajiguda, Sanath Nagar, Sitaphalmandi, etc., in Hyderabad.

3. Gadwal sarees

They are produced in Gadwal, a small town in Mahbubnagar district. Gadwal sarees are very famous for their zari border and

zari pallu (the end piece in the saree), with body made of cotton. The zari pallu and cotton body are weaved separately and

later interlocked together. Vibrant colours like parrot-green, maroon, yellow and beige are often used. Locally, the weaving

technique is known as ‘Kupadam’ or ‘Tippadamu’. In Hyderabad they are available in General Bazar, Lakdikapul, Kachiguda,

Narayanguda, etc.

4. Mangalgiri sarees

They are manufactured in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. These sarees are famous for the unique cotton fabric, with gold

or copper threads used on borders. The body is cotton, which either has stripes or checks on it and the pallu is simple with

small stripes of zari and the colours are often vibrant. In Hyderabad you can find them in areas like Himayathnagar,

Kukatpally, Banjara Hills, General Bazar, etc.

5. Dharmavaram sarees

They are from Dharmavaram located in Anantapur district. This place is famous for producing heavy bridal wear sarees made

of rich golden zari. They are made of silk fabric and have rich pallu and border of zari brocade. The pallu and borders

contrast with the body of the fabric. One can find a combination of different colours like yellow, maroon, pink, blue, green

and many more. They are available in Hyderabad in areas like Monda Market, Habsiguda, Uppal, Marredpally, etc.

6. Venkatagiri sarees
