To lessen the introduction of drug-resistant bacteria and keep the potency of ZITHROMAX (azithromycin) and other antibacterial drugs, this drug should be used only to treat or prevent infections which are proven or strongly suspected to become triggered by bacteria.


 

Mechanism of action:


It is used to treat certain bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. This medicine may mask or delay the symptoms of syphilis. It is not effective against syphilis infections. It is belongs to the class of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.


 

Indications:

This drug can be used for patients of hemophilic influenza, moraxella catarrhalis, and streptococcus pneumonias.

Precautions:


Because azithromycin is principally eliminated via the liver, caution should be exercised when it is administered to patients with impaired hepatic function. There are no data regarding its usage in patients with renal impairment; thus, caution should be exercised when prescribing this drug in these patients.
Prescribing Zithromax (azithromycin) in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

 

Side effects:

chest pain, uneven heartbeats;
Diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
Severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin...Vaginitis, palpitation, vomiting, headache, fatigue, insomnolence, and angioedema.

 

Dosage:

These tablets are to be taken 500mg single dose for the first day and 250mg in the 2nd-5th day of treatment. The tablets may be taken with or without food.
For the treatment of genital ulcers a single dose of 1000mg should be use.
For the treatment of urethritis and cervicitis a single dose of 2000mg should be used.

 

Drug interactions:

Aluminum-and magnesium-containing antacids reduce the peak serum levels (rate) but not the AUC (extent) of its (500 mg) absorption.
Administration of cimetidine (800 mg) two hours prior to this medicine had no effect on its (500 mg) absorption. A single oral dose of 1200 mg azithromycin (2 x 600 mg ZITHROMAX tablets) did not alter the pharmacokinetics of a single 800 mg oral dose of fluconazole in healthy adult subjects. Total exposure (AUC) and half-life of azithromycin following the single oral tablet dose of 1200 mg were unchanged and the reduction in Cmax was not significant (mean decrease of 18%) by coadministration with 800 mg fluconazole. A single oral dose of 1200 mg this drug(2 x 600 mg ZITHROMAX tablets) had no significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of indinavir (800 mg indinavir tid for 5 days) in healthy adult subjects.

 

Contraindications:


This product is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. Zithromax is contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice dysfunction associated with prior use of azithromycin.
 

Storage:


Store between 41-86 degrees F (5-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
