Whether you have been using eyeglasses for many years now or you have just recently been diagnosed with an eye problem, you might be considering whether contact lenses might be a good or viable option for you. But perhaps there are some reservations in your head for a number of reasons such as hearing horror stories about contact lenses, getting grossed out over the idea of inserting a foreign object into your eyes, or what have you. In any case, here is a list of the pros and cons of using contact lenses so that you can make an educated decision for yourself on whether this choice is right for you:

Pros of Contact Lenses

1.First off, this is the most obvious advantage of wearing contact lenses – aesthetic purposes. No longer does your face have to be shielded by or hidden behind a pair of eyeglasses. This makes a huge difference especially if you are a woman.

2.Secondly, contact lenses are much easier to take care of. While of course they can be torn, it is much more difficult for contact lenses to get dirty, fogged up, or broken. This is especially advantageous if you have a propensity towards extreme ...
... sports.

3.You are afforded better natural vision with contact lenses. One of the main differences between eyeglasses and contact lenses is that you are afforded better peripheral vision with contact lenses because of the shorter distance between your eyes and the corrective lenses. You also no longer have to see the frame of your eyeglasses from the side of your eyes.

4.Your contact lenses are crystal clear in the morning. Provided there aren’t any tears or stains, when you wake up in the morning, your contact lenses should be good as new having soaked in cleaning solution the whole night through. On the other hand, eyeglasses smudge immediately upon contact with your fingers or environmental elements and this means they need to be rubbed clean consistently throughout the day.

5.They are relatively hassle-free. When you wake up in the morning, all you have to do is put them on and you’re done. You may need to put drops in your eyes occasionally when they dry out but not everybody requires lubricating tears. This is more convenient than glasses which require constant adjustment, wiping clean, etc.

6.You can now wear sunglasses and goggles without giving it a second thought or looking like a complete fool!

Cons of Contact Lenses

1.In the long term, they are more costly than eyeglasses. Unlike eyeglasses that last until they reach their breaking point, disposable contact lenses need to be thrown out after a few months and you will need to purchase new ones again. There are permanent contact lenses available as well but they are not as common a choice.

2.Because of their minute size, contact lenses are much easier to lose. If you are putting on your contact lenses outside and there happens to be a gust of wind that comes by, you are in for a real problem. If you happen to drop them in your bathroom, this can also mean that they are lost forever.

3.There is a greater proclivity towards infections and cornea damage. This is because with contact lenses, as opposed to eyeglasses, there is actual contact with your eye. Of course, this risk can be minimized by cleaning your contacts thoroughly each night and every time you take them off.

4.You may experience a certain amount of discomfort with contact lenses particularly in the beginning. This is the reason why some people choose to stick to eyeglasses. You may either feel like your eyes are dry or burning. This may just be the initial reaction or it can remain.

5.You may not be able to use them for certain activities. Whether you are headed to the beach or to the mountains for a couple of days, there may not be facilities available for you to maintain your contact lenses as you should and in this case eyeglasses may be the better option.
With all of this in mind, you can now make an educated decision.
