Importance Of Erythropoietin In Anemia People With Chronic Kidney Failure
Brand name : Zyrop injection
Generic name : Erythropoietin
The Erythropoietin is a haematopoietic agent, prescribed for anemia in people with chronic kidney failure. It helps in the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow. Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein which stimulates red blood cell production. It is produced in the kidney and stimulates the division and differentiation of committed erythroid progenitors in the bone marrow. Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside the bone). In order to make red blood cells, the body maintains an adequate supply of erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that is produced by the kidney.
EPO helps make red blood cells. Having more red blood cells raises your hemoglobin levels. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that helps blood carry oxygen throughout the body.
Anemia is a disorder that occurs when there is ...
... not enough hemoglobin in a person's blood. There are several different causes of anemia. For instance, anemia can be caused by the body’s inability to produce enough EPO to make red blood cells. If this is the case, the person may have to have a blood transfusion to treat this type of anemia. If you have anemia, your physician can determine the cause.

Indications : It is indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with Chronic Renal Failure patinet, including patients on dialysis and not on dialysis. It is indicated to elevate or maintain the red blood cell level (as manifested by the hematocrit or hemoglobin determinations) and to decrease the need for transfusions in these patients.
Non-dialysis patients with symptomatic anemia considered for therapy should have hemoglobin less than 10 g/dL.
Prior to initiation of therapy, the patient's iron stores should be evaluated. Transferrin saturation should be at least 20% and ferritin at least 100 ng/mL. Blood pressure should be adequately controlled prior to initiation of therapy, and must be closely monitored and controlled during therapy.
Dosage and administration :
Chronic Renal Failure Patiet: The recommended range for the starting dose of is 50 to 100 Units/kg for adult patients. The recommended starting dose for pediatric CRF patients on dialysis is 50 Units/kg . Individualize dosing to achieve and maintain hemoglobin levels between 10-12 g/dL. The dose should be reduced as the hemoglobin approaches 12 g/dL or increases by more than 1 g/dL in any 2-week period. If hemoglobin excursions outside the recommended range occur, the dose should be adjusted as described below.
The drug may be given either as an IV or SC injection. In patients on hemodialysis, the IV route is recommended. While the administration of drug is independent on the dialysis procedure or may be administered into the venous line at the end of the dialysis procedure to obviate the need for additional venous access.
