For fifty three whole years, the Republic of India was a nation of twenty states. However, in the year 2000, a new name joined this roster. Formed out of parts of the Himalayas and Uttar Pradesh, the new region of Uttarakhand came to be on the 9th of November, 2000. With a new government and new financial measures in place, the economy of the region has soared, beating several other states equipped with better infrastructure. Along with agriculture, tourism is a major aspect of the Uttarakhand economy. Here are a few things tourists should look forward to in Uttarakhand while they travel India.

• Rishikesh
Located at a height of almost 400ms above sea level, Rishikesh is one of the many Himalayan towns that attract people because of their religious background. The word ‘Rishikesh’ is another name for Lord Shiva. One of the most popular attractions for devotees is the Ganga Aarti, performed at dusk on the Triveni Ghat. Of late, Rishikesh has also become a popular destination for adventure junkies. Rishikesh is famous for its white-water rafting, bungee jumping, trekking and rock climbing, among both local ...
... and international tourists.

• Mussoorie
If you’re looking to be in the mountains, but away from the religious chaos and adrenaline filled adventure sports of Rishikesh, you might want to go to Mussoorie instead. Home of the famed writer Ruskin Bond, Mussoorie is as calm and peaceful a place as where you’d imagine a writer would choose to live. A popular escape for citizens of the nearest metropolis, New Delhi, Mussoorie is famous not just for being a pretty hill station, but also housing some on India’s best known educational academies, such as the Woodstock School and St. George’s College.

• Valley of Flowers National Park
One of the most secluded nature reserves in India, the Valley of Flowers National Park is located in the Western Himalayas, in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand and along with the Nanda Devi National Park comprises of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The area is famous for being home to several varieties of endemic mountain flowers as well as a diverse range of fauna. This includes the Asiatic black bear, the elusive and highly mythologized snow leopard, more common species of animals such as the red fox and musk deer, not to mention the many species of mountainous birds that visit the park, namely the Himalayan Monal pheasant.

• Haridwar
Another attraction for pilgrims and devotees, the city of Haridwar is famous for its mythological and religious connections, which include ties with the Hindu epic Mahabharata as well as other Hindu beliefs. While the town doesn’t offer much other than spiritual tourism, all tourists should experience the rush of being in a place so holy, and filled with so many believers.

Uttarakhand might be a new state, but its people, cultures and traditions have been alive for centuries. There are several Valley of Flowers tour packages available, and signing up for one of them if a great way to discover this lovely state!
