Leaky pipes and backed up water systems can be a serious headache to the homeowner that is faced with dealing with these issues. There is not much else short of catastrophe that is going to cause as much damage to a home as plumbing issues. As a homeowner, you can take some preventive steps to make sure you are not affected by serious plumbing issues.

Do not let your faucet leak. Did you know a leaky faucet can waste about 150 gallons of water every day? If you have a leak, never ignore it. It could be coming from the faucet or the pipes. Continually check pipes and faucets for extra moisture or small leaks.

Don't pay a plumber until the job is completed. A plumber may require some money upfront, but it's wise to wait until the job is completely done before giving him the entire payment. Many things can happen between the stop and end of a job, so to be safe wait until you are satisfied with the completed work before paying.

You don't want to end up with frozen pipes, so take preventive action, such as wrapping outside pipes with insulation, and keeping indoor temperatures above freezing at all times. Obviously, ...
... if it is below freezing outdoors, the pipes will be subjected to the same temperatures. In the very least, you could lose running water inside while waiting for the pipes to unfreeze. Frozen pipes can also burst, which can be very messy and expensive to repair.

Do not pour grease or oil down any of your household drains. Put them in containers and place in the fridge until they are solid, then throw them away. If you pour them down the drain, they can solidify in cold pipes. These solid masses will clog your pipes and are very difficult to remove.

You should drain all of the water out of the tank of your hot water heater at least once every three to six months. Draining all of the water out of the tank helps to prevent sediment build-up at the bottom of the tank. This sediment can cause the tank to bang or to heat less efficiently.

You should make sure not to put oils down the drain, such as grease and fat. These substances will clog the drain as they cool and harden. If the sink has a garbage disposal, it will also make the blades less efficient. Pour the grease and oil into a can to cool, put it in the trash.

Make sure to pour a gallon or two of water into drains that are used infrequently. Not only does this make sure that they are clear when you need them, but can also fill the trap and make sure that unpleasant odors don't enter your home. Doing this periodically will also help you to catch problems before they become serious.

Make sure that any exposed pipes in your home are insulated, especially those frozen pipes denver found in crawl spaces on the outside walls of your home. This will help keep them from freezing and causing you tons of problems. Frozen pipes can often be devastating and leave you with problems that are expensive to fix and no water in the middle of winter.

To summarize, you are looking for the best advice available, when it comes to taking care of plumbing issues that might arise in your house. The cost that it would take to hire somebody might not be something you can deal with right now. Hopefully, the tips in this article will prove to be beneficial and point you in the right direction.
