How To Become A Successful Event Manager?
Not so long ago, when we heard the term ‘event management’, it conjured up images of corporate hospitality or sporting events. Today, it has transformed itself into a huge and fast growing industry, with event managers involved in organizing anything from trade fairs to weddings, conferences, seminars and street festivals.
The most enticing factor about being in this field is- one day you are interviewing a celebrity over dinner to discuss her latest film, the next day you are off to organize a product launch. It is a glamorous, sociable, and diverse industry.
A career in event management is not for a person who is in love with his/her sleep. It surely is not a 9-5 job and it entails a lot of hard work, topped with long working hours, usually in the days nearing an event. However, if you are really passionate about your job, you won’t really mind. It’s all worth it when in the end you put together all the jumbled pieces together and see the event come to shape.
Basically, events managers are the ambassadors for the clients who want to conduct ...
... an event; it can be a charity fundraiser, a dog show, or a party. Once the sales team is done with the booking of the event, the event managers take over, and start coordinating the event. You conduct regular meetings with the client to discuss their needs, sort the venue out and ensure that all services are coordinated like catering, audio visuals etc.
It is a young person’s job, as lots of people exhaust their energy and enthusiasm after few years due to the demanding nature of the work. While others move onto the stream of management and the rest set up their own business, to meet the growing demands of this competitive industry. Those people, who leave, realize their greener pastures lies somewhere else. Still a lot of people miss their field so much that they return to it after a short break.
A lot of people enter this industry with unrelated degrees, whilst others move from a diploma in sales and marketing. People are also choosing to do a course in event management. The first degree in this field was done during the nineties. After that it was taught as modules in tourism courses, but eventually it became clear that the growing demand pressed the need for a distinct discipline in itself.
You can choose any route, but you must be prepared to begin from scratch and remember that any relevant experience is useful. You can have the best degree, but a good personality and experience counts. In a competitive industry like this, you have to ensure that you stand out.
A final advice- never rest on your past laurels. Events are basically performances and you are only as good as your last one.
