Where Can I Travel In Belize?
For the outdoor enthusiast, Belize presents unlimited opportunities. Located in Central America's Caribbean coast, Belize has a population estimate of 270,000 people with Belmopan her capital city. It's a country of various cultures, languages and ethnic groups, English being the official language though Spanish is spoken by almost half of the population. Every destination in Belize has its share of archaeological and national parks, marine and nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries.
If you plan to stay for some time, Belize has few first class hotels, but smaller establishments give good value. There are mountain lodges in the interior and resort hotels on the Caribbean Coast. Budget options range from simple guest houses to basic beach cabins. If you prefer self catering, then renting an apartment on a monthly basis is never a bad idea. For those who crave camping/caravanning, budget campsite facilities are available in most districts. A few hotels and guesthouses offer camping on their private beaches or yards.
Wonderful selection of restaurants are ready to serve you international Chinese, Creole and Latin ...
... American food. Though service and quality vary, food is generally cheap. Some of the national specialities include tacos, corn or flour tortillas with shredded chicken, onions, cabbage and cilantro, rice and beans, split peas and pig tail over rice, game meat and plantains fried to a sweet golden brown. Complementing these are some sumptuous national drinks which comprise coconut rum mixed with pineapple juice, belikin beer and fresh orange, lime, watermelon or cantaloupe juice. Grace your night life by visiting bars in the top-end hotels which usually host live bands. Though not being a major clubbing destination, you have enough to keep you entertained. Casinos are also available or get a lively bar scene at San Pedro.
Manoeuvre through this subtropical region which has high annual temperatures and humidity via local airlines, scheduled boats, or buses and car hire. Plunge into the depths of the Blue Hole which is considered one of the best dive sites; windsurf or sail off the cayes where the water is so clear; go bird spotting at Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary notable for the Jaribu stock population; join a manatee-watching boat trip; cool off in St Herman's Blue Hole National Park; go caving at Belize's interior which has thousands of caves; canoe along the Macal River in Cavo district and see tigers and tapirs or catch all types of fish al Belize's barrier reef. Alternatively, gaze at Belize's longest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere; visit Altun Ha, a traditional major Mayan ceremonial and trading centre; take a motorboat up the New River; discover the famous perfectly carved crystal skull found in a temple vault on the Mayan site of Lubaantum; travel into the Chiquibil rainforest; catch a glimpse of the jaguar in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary; wander through Belize City and marvel at impressive sights or simply get yourself some souvenirs that include Belizean art and jewellery, clothing, handcrafted wood and bamboo products, spices and sauces and local beauty treatments.
Most visits to Belize are trouble free but you ought be on guard and exercise caution as there have been occasional violent incidents against tourists. The threat from tourism is also low but beware that the hurricane season usually runs from June to November. All said and done, Belize remains one of the best places to visit.
