Many people fear cancer clinical trials. Often times it is believed that cancer clinical trials will offer sub-par treatment or the patient will be treated like a guinea pig and tested with no regard for their rights or health. This is simply untrue and nearly the opposite of what is actually true. In reality a cancer clinical trial is to give the patients extra care and attention and collect cancer information. These trials are set up with extremely monitored and exact treatment methods and goals in mind. Many times they won't even begin until the doctors are almost certain of the result they will get among the patients. Of course there are risks, but most times, those in cancer clinical trials are the first to receive a new treatment that will become the new standard treatment.

The way that most cancer clinical trials are set up is that people with cancer, often times certain types of cancer, are asked to volunteer to take part in a study. Almost always these trials are set up with the intention of gaining more cancer information on their particular type of cancer. They will also be testing a new method of ...
... treating their certain type of cancer. These cancer clinical trials will include following a specific treatment schedule and the patient will be monitored frequently by both the doctors and staff. Each step the patient takes, whether positive or negative will be monitored and recorded, as well as the side effects that seem to be taking place in conjunction with the treatment.

Cancer information will be gathered from how the cancer is responding to the each of the treatments. This will give the researchers a more in depth look to how certain types of cancer act in different conditions and environments. While some cancer clinical trials end with no conclusive results, almost all will at least come out with a better understanding of the cancer studied and new cancer information that will be used to set up another cancer clinical trial.

Often times these trials will get a bad reputation because of the potential side effects that can take place, as well as the possibility of a placebo. The side effects are easy to understand and are certainly a risk that each patient faces. The fact that these trials are a way to gain cancer information shows that not everything is known about them or about their treatment. Many times the drugs that are thought to work against the cancer cells will only make things worse, or will cause other parts of the body to react in unexpected ways. While every precaution is taken to avoid these side effects, the human body can be very unpredictable.

As far as the placebo goes, researchers have begun to notice that many times patients will start to get or feel better if they think they should be feeling better. The placebo group eliminates this possible effect from the results. This group of people is receiving a treatment that seems to be the same as everyone else, while in reality it isn't anything. Nothing is being done to change their cancer, they only think something is happening. In the end, the researchers will take the percentage of patients who made advances toward healing with the placebo treatment will be subtracted from the overall total of those who made progress with the actual treatment. This final number will help doctors determine if the treatment was any more helpful than the current treatment method for that cancer type.
You should understand the need and process of a cancer clinical trials as well as gather your own cancer information before signing up for treatment or trials.
