Plenty of people hate their jobs; it doesn't mean, however, that they hate the security provided by those jobs. In addition to other things, when you operate alone the only person responsible for what goes on is you. That lack of support becomes far more important when it hits home that you and you alone are responsible for your income. That can be a daunting reality that most people are not willing to take. So, with any luck, you haven't yet given notice at your day job. It's better to do your planning, prep and foundation building while you're still earning reliable money at work.

Solo entrepreneurs must be extremely budget conscious if they want to break into profit. Many different technological products promise to help you make more money, but you can't buy all of them. Before purchasing any such products, you have to be able to decide if it's going to make any real difference to your bottom line. You should set a firm budget for expenses that aren't absolutely essential for running your business.

When the proper elements are in place, then you can gain the help of others who have more experience as a solo entrepreneur. But you need to meet the right people, and you are the one to determine who is best for you. No one likes to think you're just out to get something from them, so you don't want to start off by asking someone for advice. It's best to first break the ice and develop some rapport with a person.

Many knowledgeable people enjoy sharing what they know under the right circumstances. Don't just contact someone out of the blue and expect them to be anxious to help you succeed. Try to bring something to the table that is useful for the other person, too.

The people you're close to and acquainted with can provide you with all kinds of connections and possibilities if you're open to this. You can never predict exactly how knowing a certain person could lead to an interesting opportunity. Each person has a certain number of people in their sphere of influence. As you look at your various social circles, you may have more influence than you ever realized. You don't have to actively seek new customers or partners all the time, but always be open to potential opportunities in this area. Make sure you nourish all of your existing relationships so they remain strong. Tell everyone what type of products or actions you're planning so word gets around about it.

If something you do as a solo entrepreneur doesn't work, simply change your approach and move on.

Take a long term view and be resolved to achieve your goals. If you do plenty of market research and testing, you will eventually find success. Once you hit your stride, you'll agree it's the best thing you've ever done.
