Preparing Your Home For A New Pet
Thinking of getting a new pet soon? Welcoming a new pet to your home can be an exciting experience. If you are living alone, then you can be assured that having a pet can be a nice idea. A dog, for example, is usually called as "man's bestfriend" and so getting one can add fun to your life. If you are living with your family, then the same thing can also be said. Kids love pets and so this can be a good way to introduce your children to animals.
However, you have to realize that it is your main duty to keep your pet and your home safe. There are certain steps that need to be taken if you want to avoid potential problems from happening in the first place.
You may have plants or flowers at home. If so, then you put them in a place where your pet will not be able to reach them. Also, take special note to keep pesticides and other chemicals away. They can be extremely hazardous to your pet's health. Speaking of which, make sure that rat poison and mothballs are also out of reach at all times.
If you are a smoker, throw your cigarette butts in the proper place so that your dog wouldn't chew on them. The same ...
... thing should be done when it comes to your alcoholic beverages.
Make it a point to tell your kids to never feed the dog with chocolate. Some small children may not be aware about it but even a small amount of chocolate can be considered poisonous for dogs. The theobromine content of chocolates can cause serious problems such as vomiting, and diarrhea, among others. This can really be toxic so make it a point to instruct and remind your children about this.
Speaking of feeding, take note that turkey, steak, and chicken bones can choke your pet. Tear the meat into smaller pieces and serve it without the bones.
Another important thing is to provide toys for your dog to chew. It is an unavoidable fact that dogs love chewing. There's really nothing you can do to stop that. However, it is necessary to give him toys to play with so that he leaves your furniture alone. Buy from a pet store and you can never go wrong. Besides, it is actually not a good idea to give your old shoes or even some of your kid's used toys. These materials are not specifically made for dogs. Plus doing that could lead your pet to forming bad habits.
Keep the doors closed at all times, too. You wouldn't want your dog to run into the streets and get accidentally hit by moving vehicles. In addition, you wouldn't want your pet to enter some rooms in your home and mess with your belongings. Just imagine what would happen in case your dog stumbles upon your antique collection!
Do not allow your pet to wander in your garage. Gasoline, motor oil and other chemicals can be harmful to pets. In fact, even a small dose of antifreeze can be lethal so make it a point to avoid this terrible mistake.
