The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) helps students with no prior experience obtain licensure and gives current RNs an opportunity to expand their careers.

Many RN positions, especially those with supervisory roles, require applicants to have a B.S.N. Students without nursing experience can complete the degree in four years, while RNs can get credit for previous education and experience, allowing them to finish their degree programs in less time.

In the first and second years, students complete general education requirements, including classes in the liberal arts and sciences. In their third and fourth years, students enroll in nursing courses and complete clinical work. Students receive practical training through the clinical component, which includes a set minimum number of hours working in a health-care facility.

The B.S.N. curriculum also gives students a broad knowledge of nursing theory and research, which lays the foundation for further study. Upon completion of the program, students who do not have a current RN license take the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-PN).

To enter a ...
... B.S.N. program, a student should have a high school diploma, with a background in mathematics and science, and a satisfactory GPA. ACT or SAT scores may be required for some programs. RNs must have a current license and a diploma or associate degree in nursing from an accredited institution.

A few B.S.N. programs offer an accelerated option to highly qualified RN applicants, which lets students complete their degree in twelve to twenty months rather than in two or more years. Those with a non-nursing baccalaureate degree can also enroll in a B.S.N. program; some general education requirements may be satisfied by previous academic work. Specific admission criteria vary by program.

B.S.N. graduates can work in almost any setting, including in traditional health-care facilities such as clinics, nursing homes, and hospitals; in businesses such as book publishers, pharmaceutical and insurance companies, and law firms; and in other places, such as schools, psychiatric units, and home-care agencies. The B.S.N. also prepares a student for graduate-level education.

The College of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree to students at campuses throughout the state of Oklahoma. All BSN nursing courses are upper division and applicants must complete the 67 academic credit hours of prerequisite course work before enrollment in the first year of the nursing program. The nursing curriculum consists of 60 semester hours of sequenced courses incorporating theoretical (in class and online) and clinical content. Graduates of the program receive a BSN degree and are eligible to sit for the state examination for licensure as a registered nurse.

Terminal Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing Baccalaureate Degree Program the graduate will be prepared to:

Provide entry-level safe, competent, ethical care to culturally diverse individuals, families and populations across health care settings and across the lifespan.
Function effectively as a member of the Nursing Profession and as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Practice professional nursing based on current evidence.
Assume accountability for evaluation and improvement of nursing practice.
Integrate the safe and confidential use of information technology and health care technology into one’s practice as a professional nurse.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), is a program designed to develop the professional knowledge and skills of registered nurses. The curriculum builds on a foundation of biological, physical, and social sciences, which contribute to the science of nursing. The liberal arts components enhance the development of the intellectual, social, and cultural aspects of the professional nurse.
This baccalaureate program includes behavioral objectives that concentrate on the development of the nurse's role as caregiver, teacher, and leader.

Utilizing human caring as a framework, registered nurses are prepared as generalists who are able to apply critical thinking, progressional skills, and knowledge to client outcomes and health care systems. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program has a 41-credit required course of study and a 6-credit elective requirement. The required course of study includes a capstone course that synthesizes baccalaureate outcomes. The required course of study fulfills only part of the 120-minimum-credit requirement for degree completion.
