Most people love dogs, because of the love and enjoyment they can bring. Know that it takes a lot of dedication to raise a puppy. Your puppy will need lots of training to become a well trained dog. Learn the training tips in this article and use them regularly, and your dog will be trained in no time.

Gradual increments are easiest on your dog when going through crate training. Eventually they will become comfortable with the crate and you can then try to shut the door to the crate. When they allow the door to shut you can give them a treat through the wiring. Keep the gate closed for short periods of time, and work your way up to longer times. If the dog becomes upset, then you need to take a step back and slow down the training.

Make sure to give your puppy plenty of toys that are okay to chew, so that he isn't tempted to chew other things that aren't okay to chew. Replace the tasty item you do not want chewed with a designated chew toy. A frozen washcloth is a great way to help your pup ease his teething pain.

Make sure you aren't enforcing bad behavior without meaning to. Don't give praise or treats ...
... to your dog if it does something wrong. For example, do not pet your dog gently when they leap on you if you want them to stop the behavior.

Train your dog in a positive manner. Give your dog rewards every time he or she does something good. Do not shout or strike the dog. This is not a particularly effective form of training. You should talk to them in a stern voice but always be nice to them if they do a good thing.

You have to be consistent with your dog's training. If multiple family members are involved in a pet's training, make sure everyone is using the same commands and a similar system of discipline and rewards. It will make it easier for the dog if it only has a simple set of commands and knows what to expect when it obeys.

Over-training your puppy will expose it to too much at once, rendering the training less effective. Brief, simple, positive training sessions are well-suited to the limited supply of energy and attention a pup has to work with. If you try to do too much, the puppy will probably not remember much except that it was an unpleasant experience, and that will make it more difficult when the time comes for the next training session.

You need to know if there are other dogs around when you are out walking your dog. Some dogs tend to be aggressive, and it's not safe to assume that every dog owner is responsible. When a dog seems unwelcoming, stay far away from them.

When training your pet, see to it that you get its attention all the time. Use his or her name when giving a command. His name will catch his attention and then he'll know you're speaking to him. Dogs tend to respond by name right away and they know that you want their attention.

Dogs need to understand exactly what your "no" means. You must find positive methods to reinforce your commands when training a dog. If you just say "no", your dog might not understand what is acceptable. Each dog is unique and has unique requirements. Training should be geared towards their needs and personality.

After reading this article, you are now prepared to train your puppy. Remain patient and reward your pet when he behaves properly. You may not master the tips right away, but you surely will in time.
