The Plan
Every writer needs a solid plan when considering publishing a book. Why? When an author develops a plan, it will help to create the opportunity to produce a highly marketable product at the end. Would you build a house without the blue prints? Or have a wedding without engaging in the typical 6 to 12 months planning period? The answer is most likely NO. Take a look at 3 helpful strategies that can assist with jump-starting the blue prints to your star quality writing plan.
1. Get Focused - The golden question to ask yourself as a writer today is... What am I going to write about? Before engaging in the writing process, you should understand what type of writer you are. What category or genre do you enjoy writing about the most? This could be drama, horror, cooking, self-help, politics, ...
... children's stories, etc. Sitting down to truly understand your identity as an author will not only help to sharpen your craft, but also keep you on track to completing your book. When an author tries to cover multiple genres or categories at one time, it leaves them with unfinished works of writings in which I like to call "engine starters". The writer starts the engine, but never presses on the gas pedal to complete the storyline.
2. Rock it out with Research! - Research! Research! Research! One cannot stress enough how important it is to take the time to research what you are going to write about. Visit book festivals, libraries, or bookstores, and observe the different books customers are browsing through that may align with your style of writing. Partake in a mini interview and approach a few people to ask why they are drawn to the books they are reading. You can also walk around the bestsellers tables or go online to review top selling books, so you can figure out how to create a storyline that is even better than the books you are researching. Join book associations like SCWBI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) or social media author discussion groups to hear how other authors are researching for their books. One helpful writer's tool, is to keep a collectors box that includes samples of books, articles, pictures, or notes, that you can refer back to while creating your own story.
3. Brainstorm - Once you have completed your research, it is now time for you to sit down, brainstorm, and outline your incredible best selling storyline. Remember, if another author can be a best seller, so can YOU! However, do not expect to come up with that amazing well thought out story in one day. Be patient and allow yourself time to jot down, scribble out, and jot down again various ideas that may come to mind. The number one tip to consider during the brainstorming process is to create a book that readers will want to buy. Not necessarily always what you like as the author, but what will sell to the public. Envision yourself as the consumer and think about what draws you in to actually purchasing a book. Plan how you will draw in your audience of readers and keep them desiring to purchase more books from you!
