Screenplay Agent - Show And Tell
Screenplay agent, show and tell is the developmental stage of the script writing process. Script writing can be a challenge. And can take time to master. After all, you want to get it just right. Your success as a screenwriter depends on it.
You can spend hours, days, weeks and even months solely working on one film script. Writing and rewriting until you have molded your every word into what you feel is a sellable screenplay.
To speed the process along, it is good to remember that visual writing is the key component to any film script. As a screenwriter what you want to do is to show your story, rather than tell your story.
Showing versus telling, why does it matter so much? A screenplay agent will tell you that it makes all the difference, when it comes to selling your film script. A clear visual picture of how the movie will play out is what studio executives, directors and producers are looking for.
The difference is as simple as this:
When you are telling a story, you are merely telling who the people are and what they are doing. Yes, it is true that you are creating situations and resolutions ...
... in the process of telling the tale. While telling a story is a good place to start, leaving it in the telling stage only limits your vision.
What makes the difference is showing who your characters are. In so doing, you let your audience see the actions of each of your characters as the story unfolds. Visual writing draws your reader into the screenplay. They begin to feel what your message is.
Using each of the five senses in your script writing will help you to begin to write more visually.
Let us take a look at an example to better explain.
Betty ate an apple.
You just told what Betty did. We do not see who Betty is or what type of apple she ate.
A more visual way to describe this would be. Betty Thomas, a precocious fifteen year old sank her teeth into a fat juicy red delicious apple.
Now, you can see clearly who Betty is and what type of apple she just ate.
Any screenplay agent will tell you that to master script writing takes a lot of writing and rewriting. Being a screenwriter the key to mastering your script writing technique lays in your ability to write visually. Visual writing creates a deeper sense of emotion to both your plot and to your characters.
