Zagreb features among the most well-connected cities in entire Europe. This, in fact, contributes to the popularity of this scenic place as a happening holiday destination for tourists from all round the globe. All that one needs to do is to choose a centrally positioned accommodation in Zagreb, to take advantage of the varied public transportation systems available in the city. Let us here take a look at the various transport options in Zagreb:
a. Trams – With over 250 terminals in the city, trams are easily the most convenient and frequently available public transport option in the Croatian capital. If you have taken up abode at any established city center hostel in Zagreb, you are likely to find at least one tram station in the vicinity. Apart from covering all the posh neighborhoods of the city, trams are available to Sesvete and Podsljeme too.
b. Buses – If your daily rental apartments or hotel in Zagreb is near the Autobusni Kolodvor, you can select buses as your preferred mode of transport for inter-city trips. The daily bus timings are published online, ...
... and you can inquire about the same to the staff at your apartment in Zagreb as well. The fares are extremely reasonable, and you can get a ZET card – to get additional waivers.
c. Taxis – There are three approved taxi organizations, which offer transportation services in the city. For commuting from your rooms in Zagreb to any of the several local tourist attractions with ease, you can get on a Radio Taxi or an EkoTaxi. If you are not averse to splurging a bit on your Croatian holiday, taking a Taxi Cammeo would be a nice option too. Avoid taking taxis that do not belong to the approved organizations, and always make sure that the taxi-meter is working fine.
d. Funicular system – Locally known as the uspinjaca, funicular rides are extremely popular in Zagreb. While booking apartments in Zagreb, you should ideally look for an accommodation facility that is near the main funicular railway station in the city. General bus and/or tram tickets can be used for getting on the funicular. If you wish to travel from the Upper Town to the Lower Town area (or vice versa), availing of the funicular service would probably be the best option. There is a touch of adventure about it too!
e. Trains – Particularly during the vacation season, it might be a trifle difficult to get affordable accommodations in Zagreb right next to a tram station. You need not worry too much on that count though – for local trains would serve as a viable alternative to the trams. You will have to be aware of the route from your chosen Zagreb apartment to Glavni Kolodvor – the main rail station of the city. Trains are available at frequent intervals, and are ideal for going on trips to the suburbs of Zagreb.
f. Private cars – In case you wish to stay away from the potential hassles of traveling in a taxi or a crowded bus, hiring a private car would be a smart alternative. Particularly while traveling along the busy sections of the city (e.g., the Slavonska Avenue or the Dubrovnik Avenue), it is handy to have a chauffeur-driven car. You will not have to worry too much about safety concerns either while returning to your rooms in Zagreb late at night – provided that you have a rental car at your disposal.
g. Water travel options – While the rippling Sava River does flow across the heart of the city, the water travel options in Zagreb are not a patch on the land transportation networks. If you wish to travel to Novi Zagreb, you can travel along the bridge built across the water body. Water transport services to a few other select locations in the city are available too. You can enjoy boat-rides on the Sava River as well.
Foreign tourists can get into Zagreb either by flight (to the Zagreb International Airport), or by trains (to the Glavni Kolodvor station). Travel expenses in the city can be significantly reduced by making a Travel Card – particularly if you are planning to spend a relatively lengthy vacation in Zagreb. Thanks to the extensive and efficient transportation options in the city, it will be easy to follow your travel itinerary!
