Writing A Feature Article - Newspaper Vs Magazine
Once, a friend asked me "Why not go to the streets and seize a story out there?"
I answered him, "I have my own topics to write. Don't tell me how to get my work done."
Reporting is not only running after thrilling stories or chaos, it is also finding out what could help in the everyday grind of life. It is being an expert in the calling of your service and how you would deliver accurate information to retain its value.
At most, I did feature articles for the lifestyle section of broadsheets. And because I wanted to make news of an event, I wrote one article in different slants for each newspaper, even for tabloids. Everything was exciting and the editors were kind to me and accommodating because they knew I was a trying-hard writer, and I submitted as quickly as possible (as a regular contributor). I juggled teaching and writing, plus daily woman responsibilities. Truly, writing was noble work. I earned it cent by cent. I am proud to say, I have roamed the streets of newspaper and magazine publishing companies, news stands, libraries, bookstores, alleys, and the narrow streets or Port Area for my work. It ...
... thrilled me a lot, those good old days! I was so happy! I thank those who inspired me to write.
In writing for newspapers, you must earn a reputation for unimpeachable accuracy and promptness. You must not disappoint your newspaper. Remember loyalty?
Also, remember that newspaper reporting is brief and must be written in simple words. It must be objective and unless you are a columnist, an opinion is not sought.
On the other hand, a feature article for a magazine comes more extended than in the newspaper. Each magazine has its own set of readers, so your article must suit the magazine followers and its theme.
A comprehensive interview is suitable for magazine writing, since the article length could be extended, as in a current problem or an achievement, for example. Magazine writing gives you more days to write and explore topics and assignments, but must be submitted months ahead if they are seasonable articles. More pictures could be collected.
Check these sample article titles as to their proper placement.
Here are possible titles for newspaper articles: Trending in Holy Week, Pope Benedict XVI Until February 28, A Boom in Gadgets
Here are possible titles for magazine articles: A Shrine of Mercy, Pope Benedict XVI: The Year of Faith, What's New With Your Androids
Titles for newspaper articles are usually trending and fresh. Titles for magazine articles are unique, a bit longer, and sometimes can be used as reference for schools (literature subjects).
Finally, in any aspect of writing feature articles, whether in newspaper or magazine, originality is the key. And of course, you are expected to entertain and inform your readers. In anything you write, aim at maximum freshness and readability. The originality of your article is your thumbprint.
Above all, it is essential to build a reputation of personal integrity.
