If you are one of those persons who are planning to rent out a room or a floor of their residential premises, then read on. This is also for people who are trying to give their extra property on rent.


Learn about your tenant before you let the tenant in. Renting decision is an important decision and can not be taken in isolation of various factors, the most important factor being the prospective tenant’s background.


Landlords all over the world understand the risks attached to bringing in a stranger as a tenant. This makes it imperative to deliberate sufficiently over the fitment of a person as a tenant. This in itself is quite a difficult task. After all, an ideal tenant would be the one who pays the rent on time, ensures upkeep of the property, and does not create problem for the neighbours. Most importantly, tenant is expected to be clean from any past criminal and other negative records.

On resistance from the landlords, Carde would turn back and accuse them of drug dealing and of threatening to kill her. She would also accuse them of embezzling the deposit money paid by Jessica while moving in.

Although this might not be one of those cases which occur often, it still is a strong indicator as to what can a landlord end up tackling if a wrong renting decision is taken. Hence it is advisable to conduct a tenant background check on the person before you hand over the property keys. In other words, gain the information on the tenant's background before letting him in.

A check on the previous, permanent and current addresses to see whether the person's tenancy period was a smooth one for the landlord or not, and whether the contact details are correct or not. Check into the employment antecedents to confirm the details stated by the person about his/her employer. A check through the criminal and other negative databases informs the landlord on the existence of any undesired past record held by the prospective tenant.
