What Does It All Mean? Time, The Universe And Your Soul
Life seems to be a struggle among living organisms that can only survive by devouring other living organisms in one way or another.
Life seems to be a struggle among living organisms that can only survive by devouring other living organisms in one way or another. In order for us to live, we have to eat. And our meals typically comprise the corpses of other living organisms, mainly plants and animals. On the other hand, the animals we eat also need to feed to survive. The plants that draw nutrients from our decaying bodies are food for other animals. Its a deathly cycle. This does not however bother us as most of us do not to have deal with the unsavory task of depriving these organisms off their lives.
This raises the question of who built the universe and why would that creator subject us to this harsh existence? Is there a God? And if the there is a God, is He as powerful as He is made out to be? If the Supreme Creator is willing to remove all the evil in this universe but cannot, He must not be omnipotent. If He is able to remove all the evil in this universe but is not willing, he must be malevolent. ...
... We cannot rule out the possibility that He is among other gods and they all live is a larger universe created by another Supreme Being, can we?
We cannot attempt to find out who we are without asking the question, do we have a soul? This seems to have been a neglected question because most of us employ a utilitarian approach to life. Therefore, this question of the existence of the soul seems to be irrelevant because it does not provide practical solutions to our daily lives. Since scientific research is mainly aimed at solving real problems, no one seems to be willing to fund research into the invention of a device that can detect the soul.
The question is therefore usually dealt with in the realm of philosophy and the recurring theme in many treatises is that the soul does not exist. Intellectualists have gone as far as postulating that it is just a concept in the mind. They put forward the theory that it is a thought; a random chemical reaction in the brain. However, it seems to a popular concept as many monuments have been erected for the deceased. The fact is that most of us are more comfortable believing that a part of us continues into the afterlife.
The question of existence also takes into account context. And is there a context more constant, so as to speak, than time? What is time? Scientists and philosophers have put forward the theory that the universe and time are parallel concepts or entities and that the occurrence of their existence was simultaneous and inseparable. There is no doubt about this: everything has a beginning and an end. And it is safe to postulate that the inevitable close of time also implies the impending end of all existence. Again, these are questions that most of us would rather not face and we choose to put them aside and focus on our daily lives, isnt it?
