Prepare To Be Amazing - Dazzle Us With Your Improved Writing Skills
I have a passion for language and have had for as long as I can remember. This leads me to both enormous joy and tremendous disappointment, as I see and hear what is on offer through the written and spoken media.
It is sometimes difficult to describe the pleasure which can be gained when reading something which feeds both the mind and the heart. This can be something brief, like a very short poem or pithy phrase of wit or wisdom. It can also be a major work, such as an epic poem in the oral tradition, or a blockbuster novel.
What they have in common is the communication of something precious or worthwhile from writer to reader. What is precious can usually be seen by how it stands the test of time. Whether a subject can be considered worthwhile is often a matter of subjective debate. In either case, a piece of writing can be thought of as valuable in its own right, providing it is constructed and presented in a manner which is interesting and thought-provoking.
Once again, these distinctions can be thought of as subjective, but I believe there are some standards which are generally accepted, without having ...
... to descend to the lowest common denominator.
Well-written rubbish is probably slightly more acceptable than clever ideas which are presented badly. The writing itself can be appreciated for its own sake.
Sometimes it is just not worth the effort to search for the nuggets in a slovenly written article, full of basic grammar mistakes.
This is where I refer to the first word of my title - prepare. I am sure there are many ways to make ready to write. Whatever works for you is the right one.
Unless you are the rare individual who can simply face the blank paper or screen and start writing, there needs to be some kind of plan in your head.
I like to work on the title, or headline, first. This can be done any time that my mind is not concentrating on other things. Once the title has sparked interest, I love to 'let it stew' in the background. This can be for anything from a few minutes to a number of hours.
A night's sleep sometimes allows ideas to bubble to the surface. In most cases, more time is spent thinking and planning the writing, than is needed to get the words down onto paper or keyboard.
It is more fun trying to compose while walking in the park, than it is when looking at a blank screen!
This may look like simple catchy alliteration, but 'proper preparation prevents poor performance' is as true for writing as it is for any other task.
Part of good preparation is to get the guidance and coaching you might need to improve and hone your writing skills.
We can not all produce a major masterpiece of writing, but we can make the effort and prepare to come up with our own best.
