It seems like everyone and their mother has a film script or a screenplay idea, the question is how can you make your screenplay standout in a sea of bad scripts. It's simple and not nearly as hard as most you might think.
1. Story Tips For Script Writing
Now the most important part of any screenplay is the story. It doesn't matter if your screenplay is in the perfect format, and completely error free if the story is garbage it's over.
A good screenplay in it's most basic form is about someone doing something they really don't want to do, but if they don't do it something really bad will happen.
Drama in other words, conflict, this is what keeps the story moving along and the reader of your script reading.
2. Script Writing Format Tips
If your script is not formatted correctly, it is going to get tossed to the side no questions asked. You need to look at it from their vantage point.
Their being bombarded with screenplays on a daily basis, it's a shame to say but they're looking for any reason they can find to lighten their load.
If your script does not meet industry standards, ...
... that's just one less script they will have to read and they will toss it with out a second thought.
Know the proper format. There is no excuse for getting the format wrong there are a lot of books out and even some free software that can help you get it right, use them.
3. Grammar Tip For Script Writing
Take the time to spell check. It sounds simple and easy but you would be surprised at the number of people who don't do this.
Being lazy, and doing things half-hearted will only get you half way there if that. I can't stress enough how important spell checking is.
Sending in a script without making sure that the grammar is correct sends the message that you're not serious, and that you are lazy. It's not hard to do. Take the time and check your grammar.
There are a lot of good sites on the web that offer free trial periods, take advantage of that. I recommend use a couple of different ones that way you'll be sure not to miss any mistakes.
It is very important that you script looks and reads like a professionals. No one is going to try to figure out what it is that you're trying to say.
The first hint that your screenplay is not up to standards they will toss it and move on. Your writing most be clear and concise.
A movie script filled with grammatical errors is like driving in a car and having it slam on the brakes after every couple of feet, it's annoying and that's not what you want.
