Books have been around for thousands of years and are still very popular and profitable. However, the old hardcopy books are not the only way to make money now. Don't forget about ebooks. While not quite as expensive, ebooks have no overhead as far as storage or delivery of a physical product. Simply download and go. Putting your book out as an ebook also gives you a chance to make money to turn it into a real, live hardcopy.
By no means should you give up writing after leaving school. Even if it's to improve your reports at work, you should practice every day.
