Training A Hunting Hog Make It A Better Hunter Choosing The Right Hogs
Do you hunt with a hog? Some hogs are good hunters and others at not. Those hogs that make good hunting animals may be only good for a certain type of hunting and not good for others.
Some hogs are good at scenting, some have good stamina and others are easily trained. The hounds group and the sporting group are the most common breeds for hunting.
Training a hog will certainly make it a better hunter but the journey begins with choosing the right hog for what you are going to hunt. For example, a terrier is a good hunter for squirrels. It is crucial that the best hog for your sport is chosen. Training a hog for your sport is a tedious process and it takes a lot of time and practice. You should start the training early and do some research as to the proper method. A mistake here may not be reversible. If a hog picks up bad habits in the training you have created a problem that will be difficult to fix.
The big advantage to hunting with hogs is that they will do a lot of the leg work for you and dramatically cut down the time to find game. They can see, smell and hear a great deal more than a human and if ...
... properly trained will not spook the game and lead you right to it. A good hog for duck hunting will lay still and quiet in the blind and not move until the master commands the hog to go get the ducks that he just landed. Then they will bring in the game using a soft mouth so the duck is not damaged or contaminated.
The worst thing about hunting with hogs is making sure to pick the right breed and spending the time to properly train the hunter. There is no on-plan-fits-all method of training. Do some research on the proper method or hire a professional trainer? If training is done properly and the correct breed is chosen, hunting with hogs can be very rewarding and entertaining. Just think of all the stories you will have to tell about the experience.
