Eight Sure-fire Ways To Get Your Article Read
Here are eight ways you can use right away to make your articles more powerful.
1. Write an attention-grabbing headline
First things first. If you don't attract your readers' attention right away, they'll disappear off somewhere else and they'll never read your carefully crafted article and your message won't get across. The best headlines are gently engaging, an iron hand in a velvet glove. By that, I mean they don't shout rudely at the reader, trying to oversell something that, frankly, doesn't merit any attention.
So, if you feel you need a whole of bunch of exclamation marks to get the point across!!!!!! Think again. Same if you feel you need CAPITALIZATION, or to say 'You really must read this'.
Instead learn a few lessons from successful Internet writers and generations of advertising copywriters to engage with your readers. This article covers many of the things you need to bear in mind when you write your headline as well as your article as a whole, but here's one tip that's a killer.
People love lists. You may be bored by all the articles and blog posts that start 'Ten ways...', but don't ...
... make the mistake of rejecting the hook that measurements tell us time and again people just lap up.
2. Write the way your readers think
Put yourself in the mind of your readers. Think about what interests them. If you're trying to sell something, go one step further and ask 'where's their pain?'. If you know what's in their mind you can write your article to answer their questions
Tell them what they want to know, not what you're interested in. Tell them how such and such a diet will benefit them and why, but don't give them a year by year account of how you spent a decade checking through the catalogues of major chemical companies.
If that's too complicated. Try replacing 'I' sentences with 'You' sentences.
3. Use the active voice
You want your readers to do something, not just fall back in their chairs and doze off as their tablet falls to the floor. Write actively. It's far more engaging.
Say 'paint the house' rather than 'do the painting of the house'. See how much simpler the first is? It makes reading an article much more enjoyable.
4. Tell a story
Get your point across painlessly by telling a story because people love stories. They're ingrained deep in most societies, where information was passed down through the generations via storytelling. Turn the lessons of the world's oral traditions to your advantage, by telling a story that your readers can identify with, about an overweight person who loses weight, about an out of work person who founds a successful home business, and so on.
5. Use emotionally laden words
Paint a compelling picture that engages your readers. Your product made life better for Mary. Or Mary wept with joy at her new life? Which is more appealing?
6, Engage with their senses
This is about experiencing something. "Smell the fragrances of traditional Japanese gardens', 'Imagine the excitement of flying your airplane in the world championships' and so on.
7. Get your readers to agree with you
Many sales courses stress the importance of getting the customer to keep saying 'yes' to innocuous questions, to get them in the mood for saying 'yes' when the time comes to ask whether they are going to purchase. Let's be a bit more sophisticated than that. But the principle is the same.
Pose questions like 'Doesn't it seem there are more diets than there are days to try them?', 'Don't you always crave for cake when you should be eating raw carrots?', that you're pretty sure of the answers to. You'll be building empathy with your readers.
8. Provide real substance
Don't make empty, unbelievable statements. You're not writing a dry scientific paper, but you can say 'Just last year researchers at UCLA found that 87% of people eating this kind of diet lost more than 5% of their bodyweight on a month'. Of course, the research does have to exist!
That should help dispel any niggling doubts in the mind of your readers.
