Selling Your Photography: How To Make Money In New And Traditional Markets?
There comes a position in every new camera addict's life, that they question themselves, can I make money with this? With one of the hundreds of unique DSLR's in hand, they take kid photo after kid photo, occasional wedding pictures, family shots that will go on walls, and more teen snapshots.
The traditional market is by far the biggest market for the freelance photographer, with millions of pictures published each month. If you would like to see some profit from your pictures, it's really important to make the right approach.
Taking pictures for the magazine or traditional market isn't about taking nice shots that your friends will admire or that will look nice on your wall at home. It's about taking images that will sell to a selective audience, and to accomplish this, you must understand the market.
Assuming that your photography ability is to par - there is no reason that you can't start sending your images to photo editors straight away. Start off by selecting the markets that you may have interest in. Pick a market that you like to photograph.
Meanwhile, all of those friends and family that ...
... consistently ask if you mind snapping a few photos of their kids start there. Before you make this pledge, make sure you have pricing written down. The question will come at the most arbitrary time, and you have to be ready to tell or show them what you charge. If not, you are going to be asked to bestow free work at every social function from now until your camera dies. How much are you going to charge for taking the photos? How much will each print cost? Do I get to have a copy of the images? These are just a couple to be ready for. Pricing on the other hand is up to you. Write down the cost, and figure out what you are satisfied charging. The fact is, if you are giving this a shot, you have to START charging.
What is so exciting about selling photos online is that, this is a lucrative system. Try your hand at offering stock images. Hundreds of online image libraries will post your images to the general public, or private organizations, and with the click of a mouse, one of your images can be sold. Sites like iStockPhoto, Stocklib, or even Getty Images, the most professional of the bunch. Most will allow you to create an account and upload photos to commence selling.
Once you have uploaded a photo in your library, it is there to be sold over and over again, generating automated income in your account. You can be sipping coffee at a café or sunbathing next to a pool and you are still selling photos 24hrs round the clock! Remember the internet never sleeps.
