A number of scents are available for both men and women. In developing these scents, manufacturers carefully attend to every detail in order to ensure that men's fragrances are attractive to men and that women's perfumes  are desired by women. This requires a careful marketing strategy, as well as the precise development of the particular formula used in a perfume.
Making the First Impression
One of the first things that an individual sees when he or she looks at a bottle of perfume is the packaging. Right away, this lets a consumer know whether the fragrance is designed for a man or for a woman. Besides just having a male or female face on the package (as is the case with Angel perfume), it could contain certain other images or colors that would make it appear either masculine or feminine. For example, pink is usually associated as being a feminine color, so scents packaged in pink wrapping would automatically let consumers know it was intended for a woman.
...
... Naming the Product
Just because the packaging looks either feminine or masculine doesn't mean that the product will be perceived as being for the right gender.  If the perfume's name doesn't sound quite right, this could leave people guessing as to which gender it is for. As a result, developers go to great lengths to make sure the fragrance has precisely the right name so that they can easily market it to either men or women.  This is especially important when creating men's perfume, as males are unlikely to purchase fragrances that have feminine sounding names.
Selecting Masculine or Feminine Scents
Perfume makers also want to make sure the scents they use are either masculine or feminine. Some examples of scents for women include flowery fragrances such as rose, lavender and chamomile, while men's fragrances could consist of sandalwood or musk. A man's cologne could even smell somewhat like tobacco, as is the case with a fragrance known as Pure Havane.  Women's perfumes also tend to be more lightly scented, while men's colognes will normally have a stronger scent that is much more noticeable. A good example of this is the fragrance known as Amen perfume.
Considering Genetic Makeup
Male hormones react differently to certain chemicals than female hormones do. The way these hormones react is a key component of fragrance development. When coming up with a new scent, scientists are careful to choose fragrances that do not clash with these hormones, but complement them instead. Before being released to the public, new perfumes may be tested on several people ahead of time in order to ensure that precisely the right formula has been developed.
Careful attention to detail is required in order to make sure a woman's fragrance is ideal for females and that a man's perfume is best suited for males. Perfume makers around the world have crafting a perfume for one gender or another down to a very fine science.
