Article marketing shares a characteristic with top chefs and leading actors. The reputations of authors, cullinarians and thespians are built one article, meal or performance at a time. Hard earned reputations can be damaged or even destroyed by one bad piece of work. Poor grammar and spelling mistakes are not conducive to establishing a relationship of trust and confidence with your readers.
Article marketing quality control
The style of your writing will reflect your personality, but you must still be professional. There is no place in good writing for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Avoid solecisms by proof reading your article.
Here are five proof-reading tips:
#1. Review a printed version of your article:
Since Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press almost 600 years ago, we have become accustomed to reading text in black ink on a white background. Our brains can easily spot a spelling error, extra space, missed space or incorrect punctuation mark when our article is printed. Whereas, these mistakes are often missed when reading from a computer screen even if the text is black ...
... on a white background.
#2. Read your article out loud:
We do not read a piece of prose as it is written. Our brains fill in gaps in the text and interprets what the author is saying.
By reading the printed article out loud in a deliberate way, you force yourself to deal with the article as it is really written and not how your brain interprets it.
#3. Sleep on it:
It is difficult to edit your prose when you have been closely involved with doing the research for, planning and writing of your article. You are too familiar with the your work and you will likely see the piece as you remember it, not as it is written.
The solution is to put our work aside until the following day. Taking time away from your work means that when do come to review it, it will feel like you're reading it for the first time.
#4. Get someone else to proof-read your work:
Having another person review your work is the best way to quality control your work. He or she is coming to your article without having been involved in its preparation and writing. Consequently, solecisms and other errors are more likely to be noticed.
#5. Proof-read your article again:
You should review your article each time you edit it. You may have to proof-read your work twice, thrice or even more times until you are satisfied that it is free from grammatical and spelling errors.
Do not rely on the spell checker on your word processor. Penguin Books (Australia) learned that lesson to their cost a few years ago when they did not adequately proof-read a recipe in a book they published. The ingredients should have called for "freshly ground black pepper". However, the recipe, as printed, called for "freshly ground black people". 7000 copies of that book became freshly pulped paper.
Proof-reading Pays Off
Proof-reading your articles is key to your quality control. Once your article is published on someone's website, the errors are out there for all to see and the damage to your credibility has been done.
One of the most common reasons why articles are rejected by article directories is because of grammatical and spelling errors. If you continually submit work that contains such errors, eventually your account might be closed.
Proof-reading is your key quality control technique in article marketing. Proof-reading your work rigorously will not only ensure your articles are free from solecisms and other errors, but will also result in more of your work being accepted for publication.
