... the engine, then open the hood. Never open the radiator cap if the engine is running. Look at the coolant you have in your radiator by checking it with a dipstick but remember that coolant usually needs to be mixed with water before putting it into your vehicle.

Look for the warning signs that your mechanic is not as competent as you might hope. If you have trouble getting a straight answer out of them, (or if, even worse, they refuse to answer questions to your satisfaction) they probably aren't the kind of people you want to work with. It is important to have full confidence in the competence of your mechanic. If you don't, then move on to a better choice.

Ask for labor rates or prices before hiring a mechanic. Not all shops will be upfront about their prices, so ask anyone available for this information. Since it's your car, you have to know the cost of repairs. Some service shops have estimated times for repair, establish by the manufacturers. Repairs that seem minor may take all day long.

If you are offered parts that are reconditioned or rebuilt, this means that they have been re-manufactured so that they are like new. "Salvage" means that the parts are used and lack alteration.
