I Want To Write Not Do The Dishes Or Vacuuming
Going to a coffee shop, you often see people sitting behind their laptop. Some are focused and concentrated and look like they are actually working. Others use their laptop for entertainment hanging out on Facebook, Twitter or surfing the Internet.
Some of my friends don't get why I bring my computer to a coffee shop. They don't get the point. "Why bring your laptop when you can sit at home using it", they ask. From their perspective, I get it. For many people a computer equals work while a coffee shop equals fun and pleasure. They find it difficult to understand that I bring my computer to a cafe to write.
When it comes to my writing, I don't distinguish between work and leisure. It's both work and fun. To me going to a coffee shop to write is a necessity. I don't have an office and I need it to get out of the house. It's the only alternative to my living room.
Like all kinds of work, writing needs a little bit of discipline. I find it hard to get work done from my living room. Yes, I know it would be cheaper for me to drink my coffee at home, but what happens to my mind when I planned to write at home is ...
... quite fascinating and my only solution is to bring my laptop and open it at a coffee shop.
You see when I'm at home sitting in front of the computer trying to get some work done, I start to think of all the chores that need to be done around the house, like doing the dishes or vacuum the living room. The urge to do the dishes and vacuum takes the better of me and I end up with a clean house but no words in my notebook.
The second reason is that it's simply more inspiring to be at a cafe. Sitting at home can be a bit doll and boring. A good cafe is a place with a laid-back atmosphere and where the staff is happy to have me even if I only buy one cup of coffee. It's also important for me that the chairs or the coaches in the coffee shop are comfortable.
I love to sit on a couch, with my feet up and my laptop in my lap. This is the best way to write. Sitting up straight with the computer on a table is not for me. Another good reason to write from a cafe is that you get to see and meet other people.
Sitting at home, writing can be rather lonely. Going out is a good way to meet new people and to get new acquaintances sometimes even friends, actually some of my best friends I meet working out of a coffee shop in Budapest.
I wrote this article in a coffee shop. I came in late because I started out trying to write from home. Now guess what, the dishes are done and the living room is vacuumed.
