How To Find Time To Write An Ebook
In 2011, I wrote over 30 ebooks and revised/edited almost 20 more. But finding time to write these days has become a real struggle. Following are two ways to find time to write your eBook. If you don't make it a priority, you'll never finish it. These tips will help you find your weak spots when it comes to time, and fix them so you can achieve your self-publishing dreams.
(I) Recognize Where You Waste Time: Much like money, most of us don't realize just how much time we waste on non-productive tasks. So the task here is to figure out just where you waste time so you can "plug that hole," so to speak.
For me, it's social media. You see, I wasn't an early adopter of social media, so when I did start to interact, I felt like I had to make up for lost time. Over the last year or so I've made a concerted effort to beef up my interaction. I went from interacting maybe a few times per week on Twitter, to interacting daily on three of the biggies, ie, Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
So my advice here is that once you develop some traction on social media, back off a bit. For example, you could only log on a couple ...
... of times per day - once in the mornings and once before you log off for the day -- as opposed to staying logged in all day every day.
This will cut down on the amount of time you spend responding to queries and checking your numbers for example.
I know when I stay logged in - I get sucked in; sucked into responding to those who reach out to me, reading links forwarded by others, and retweeting/forwarding them on. Before I know it, a couple of hours have passed. Cutting back to logging in twice per day will help a lot (a simple change, I know, but an effective one).
(II) Schedule Time to Write: On the face of it, this seems pretty straightforward and easy to do, right? But, let me illustrate why it can get more complicated depending on your writing personality.
I like to write in chunks of time, eg, three hours, four hours, etc. If I don't have this amount of time to devote to writing on my ebooks, I usually I'll put it off until I can.
I justify putting it off by saying something to the effect of, "I'll finish up this project today; that way, I can devote all day tomorrow to writing." Only, tomorrow never comes.
In order to break this habit, schedule small blocks of writing time every day. It can be as little as 15 minutes. What I'm going to start doing is scheduling 30 minutes of writing time per day. This will serve two purposes: (a) it'll get me writing every day; and (b) I know that some of these half-hour writing sessions will turn into two or three hour sessions.
How to Find Time to Write Your eBook: Conclusion
Tiny drops of water can dissolve mountains over time. So start "drip writing" in order to keep your self-publishing dreams from dissolving.
