How To Become A Writer - 3 Powerful Ideas To Start You Writing
When I discuss writing with people, I am constantly surprised by how many of them who say they would also like to be a writer.
The most common phrase is something like 'I have always thought I should write a book'.
This is usually followed by the reasons why this would be impossible for them. It is almost always because they believe they do not have the time.
I can find this amusing, when a conversation can go on to discuss some recent TV program or other pass-time which has held their interest.
For too long, I thought writing and publishing were 'way out of my league'. I simply had no example to follow and no experience to convince me otherwise.
All this changed when I began to take an interest in blogs, forums and other sources of reading material available on the internet.
I read so much which made me think I might well have something to contribute, so I started to research how to get started getting my own ideas into print.
Since school days, I had found the act of writing a real chore, so my first powerful idea was to find a method of getting words onto paper which I did not shy ...
... away from by instinct. With the best will in the world, pen and paper is just not my thing - anything more than two or three sentences and I have writer's cramp!
Enter the magic of technology; when I first used word recognition software, I was like a child in a candy shop. I simply spoke the words and there they were on my computer screen.
No more tired fingers and giving up after a few minutes. Whole passages could be produced rapidly and painlessly.
A new world opened up for me - my main excuse for not writing disappeared.
Next, I needed to create the best setting in which to do my writing. I work at home, so I put the 'do not disturb' sign on the door.
I make my 'writing corner', by the computer, as comfortable as possible, with anything I might need within easy reach.
Relaxing first helps me to concentrate, so I have two or three minutes of music or poetry. Then simply write, for whatever period of time I have decided upon - usually twenty to forty minutes.
My third idea I stumbled upon almost by accident, but it has had the most powerful effect on my results.
Sow the seed beforehand. This might sound a bit flakey, but it is how I enlist the help of my sub-conscious mind. I like to do my writing first thing in the morning, so before I go to sleep, I think for a couple of minutes about what I want to write about.
When it really works well, (as it did with this article), I wake in the morning with most of my ideas in order and ready to simply commit to paper/computer.
I now look forward to my writing sessions, whereas in the past it was a chore at best and something to be avoided most of the time.
So to make a start as a writer, decide which suits you best. Are you happy with pen and paper? Is typing more your style, or are you happier watching the words appear on screen as you speak them.
Make your writing space as comfortable and relaxed as possible, for the length of time which suits you.
Best of all, try 'planting the seed' of your idea some time before your session. This is best overnight, as sleep appears to do magic.
You might just be surprised, as I was, by the results you can produce.
Those three outline ideas can get you started. For those who are serious about being the best writer they can be, there is great help and guidance available if you are prepared to search it out.
If you are someone who has always thought you might be able to write, why not give it a go?
