How To Prepare To Buy A New Vehicle: Research
If you are looking to buy a new car, there are many things you need to do to guarantee you are getting a fair price for your new vehicle. The best thing you can do is to sit down and do some research, something you can begin right in the comfort of your own home.
The Dealer
The first thing you will want to do is start researching dealers in your area. Not only do you want to compare internet quotes from different dealers, you will want to look at actual reviews of these dealerships. Many unhappy (and happy) customers will go to the internet to vent their frustration or proclaim their satisfaction. This research will allow you to see what you are getting into, without even visiting the dealership. You can also talk to family and friends to see where they buy their cars and learn about their experiences. Knowing internet quotes will arm you with the competitor's prices for when you begin visiting dealerships- no one likes to be undersold by their competition! Also check into monthly specials offered by the dealers, which are constantly changing. During slow times like the end of the month, winter months, and ...
... weekdays, dealers may accept lower offers. And obviously the best time for deals is the end of the year when dealers are trying to get old models off their lots.
The Car
In researching the vehicle you are looking to buy, I am going to assume you have also researched the retail price of this vehicle. And while you may be comfortable paying the price advertised on the dealer's website, there is a way to pay less for the vehicle you want. Start by doing some research and looking up the invoice price of the vehicle you are interested in. The invoice price is the price the manufacturer sells the car to the dealer for. The dealer then marks up the car to the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), often the price it is advertised for. In addition to talking the dealer down from the MSRP by knowing the invoice price, you may quality for rebates that will help decrease the amount you pay for the vehicle. There are numerous rebates available to consumers- many you may not even know about. Look into what you may qualify for- things like the vehicles you already own, military service and your place of employment may qualify you for a rebate. The dealership is aware of these different rebates, but may not always share them in order to keep additional profits to themselves. That is why it is important to come prepared with this information.
The Purchaser
It doesn't just stop there. There are things you must do as a purchaser to ensure you are prepared and receiving the best price. You should always be aware of your credit history, as any loan amount and interest rate depends on that. Every person is eligible to receive a free copy of their credit report once a year; this allows you to check up on your credit and work to correct any mistakes that may have been made. After you know your credit history, meet with your local bank to see what interest rates they can provide you with. Dealers often offer loans from their finance department; however they may not give you the best rates, resulting in more profit for the dealer.
There are multiple things you can do in order to guarantee you get a fair price on your next vehicle, all beginning with research. Doing the research tells the salesperson you know what you are talking about, and helps ensure you receive the good deal you are looking for.
