Sinking happens. Granted, it thankfully happens a lot less these days but they do still happen all around the world, even on five star cruises. There is definitely more chance of your boat going down than your plane crashing, so learning how to deal with it is worth your while. Remember these 5 points and you'll stand a much better chance of getting out alive

Life jacket. If you do nothing else in your attempt to survive, make sure you wear a life jacket. This piece of equipment is responsible for saving more lives than any other. The 2 top reasons are that a life jacket will keep you upright and let you know where the water's surface is if you become disorientated. Secondly, you cannot swim for an indefinite amount of time and a lifejacket will keep you afloat without your effort

Stay calm. The majority of survivors from sinking ships attribute their survival to staying calm. When you are in a state of panic you make hasty decisions and burn up much need energy. Boats no not just sink in minutes. Most of the time they take a good few hours so spend a little time calming yourself down and thinking through ...
... your actions carefully

Stay high. When a boat is on its way to join the fishes, you really do not want to be anywhere south of the deck. There are a lot more hazards below deck and you can easily get trapped in rooms or pockets of water. head up to the ships deck as fast as you can and resist the urge to head back down

Move away from the ship. Crude tests have contradicted the idea that a ship going down will suck down surrounding things with it. However, no one can really predict what would happen with any degree of accuracy and people who have experienced it first hand have claimed that a pull effect does occur. To rather be safe than sorry, move at least 60 meters away from the sinking ship

Stick together. If there is no lifeboat to get into, ensure that everyone huddles in a group in the water. This will improve your visibility to any rescuers, it will maintain your body temperature as best as possible and will minimise you chances of being attacked by predators as they will class your group as a large animal.
If you're looking for very safe cruises go for river cruise alternatively for a cruise agent with high saftey records go to Peter Deilmann Cruises
