Wedding sparkler writing has become one of the biggest trends in wedding photography. Many photographers will get shots of the bride spelling out "love" or her new last name, or get the entire bridal party creating a heart. This is a fun, creative take on sparklers for weddings, and it really creates magical photographs. If you're thinking about adding sparklers to your wedding, you're probably already familiar with the idea of having your guests create a tunnel for you and your spouse to pass through as you exit, or using sparklers during the send-off.

Still, you might be wondering if there are any other ways to use wedding sparklers, and this is it. These magical and impossible-looking pictures require a bit of work on the part of your photographer, as well as premium sparklers for weddings, not the cheap fireworks type, but it's very do-able when your photographer follows these steps.

To capture wedding sparkler writing shots, your photographer will require two off camera flashes on stands, a tripod, a camera, a wireless remote or an assistant, the sparklers and you! They'll set the flashes on manual at 1/2 ...
... and point them directly at you and your new spouse. To capture the bright writing, long exposure shots are necessary and the off camera flash will freeze the two of you in the picture.

You might want to talk to your photographer about your ideas for the picture, including what you'd like written and how you would like to pose, and where. Maybe you want a shot of an embrace along the shore with a sparkler in your hand spelling out "Forever," or you'd like a picture of a kiss between the two of you with a heart formed around you. Your photographer will have you hold the sparkler and they will actually do the writing with another sparkler, and the final picture will make it seem as if you wrote the word.

Because you will hold a lit sparkler fairly close to you for this long exposure shot, the sparkler itself will cast off enough light to illuminate you and your spouse in the darkness. Your photographer will also use a closed aperture and off camera flash to help make sure you are both visible and well lit.

Once the two of you are posed, your photographer will set the camera to manual so they can control shutter and aperture. A higher aperture means the sparklers for weddings will be defined. The flash setting will also be set to the rear, instead of leaving it at normal which makes the flash go off at the start. By having the flash go off at the end of the exposure, right before the shutter closes, you and your spouse will be frozen in place, but you'll need to be as still as you can.

The photographer will also set the camera on a time for the length of the exposure, or setting the shutter to bulb. They'll have their assistant actually take the picture and they will do the writing. When the photographer is ready, the assistant will depress the shutter button and hold it. Your photographer will light a new sparkler from the one in your hand and paint the words with the light, leaving the frame when the assistant is ready to release the shutter. The flash will go off, the shutter will close and you will have a beautiful memento of your wedding!

If you're planning to have your photographer take one of these neat pictures, make sure you look for premium wedding sparklers for sale, not the type you buy on the 4th of July. These 36" wedding sparklers burn for 4 minutes, giving your photographer enough time to get the shot, and they won't produce any smoke or ash that will ruin your picture.
