Various Uses Of Abrasives
Abrasives can be very useful, and they are used to perform a wide range of activities. They are typically used in domestic, commercial and industrial scenarios. Abrasives come in different shapes, sizes and types, with each type tailor-made to perform a particular function and suit a user's preference. Industrial and commercial abrasives are more versatile and heavy duty as compared to domestic abrasives. Industrial and commercial abrasives require machine assistance while domestic abrasives are very basic and can be used manually. Abrasives need to be used with utmost care, as the process of using abrasives entails the release of minute particles that can be harmful to human health and the environment. Some common uses of abrasives include the following:
Polishing
Polishing is probably the most common use of abrasives. The polishing process involves scrubbing the abrasive against the target, and the friction that is created produces fine, smooth finish. Extra care needs to be taken to avoid over scrubbing, which may affect the structural integrity of the final piece. Abrasives used in the process include emery ...
... paper, abrasive powder, hand files, steel wool, fine sandpaper and abrasive paper among other accessories. The smooth texture and shiny luster of a final product gives it a more aesthetic appeal, hence the reason why polishing is used as a finishing or restorative process. Polishing uses include cleaning jewelry, smoothening statues, car detailing, metal work and wood work among other things.
Sharpening
Abrasives are also used to sharpen tools and blades. The use of abrasives is performed either manually or using machines. The sharpening process creates a lot of residue, which can be quite harmful to human beings. Therefore, it is necessary to wear protective gear to reduce the detrimental effects that may result from the process. High quality goggles will mitigate the sharp particles from getting in your eyes, while dust masks will stop the minute dust particles and smell from reaching your respiratory tract. Wearing protective clothing such as a dust coat or overalls during the exercise is advised, especially in high activity areas such as workshops.
Clean Up
Abrasives are used to clean and restore an item to its previous state. The abrasive scours the item’s surface and gets rid of dirt and stains, bringing back the luster it once had. Unlike polishing where a fine, smooth texture is the ultimate goal, clean up is solely used to get rid of dirt and stains on an item. However, the two processes work hand in hand.
Due diligence and care should always be exercised when using abrasives. This includes buying safe and trusted products from a trustworthy supplier of abrasives , and exercising extra caution when performing the activity using machines (like grinders, buffing machines, smoothening stone, grinding discs and rasps). It’s a good idea to avoid long term bare hand contact with abrasive paper, steel wool and other abrasive compounds.
