Even experienced creative persons occasionally struggle with creating naturalistic three-dimensional pictures. Naturally they know the fundamental principles and create naturalistic drawings intuitively. But occasionally even the most experienced discover elements in their work that appear distorted and unnatural.

For beginners it's even much more difficult, they've to exercise daily to move up a steep learning curve. It is well-known that outstanding drawing abilities are the outcome of daily practicing. Instead knowing the three most crucial rules of three-dimensional drawing will make things easier for you. They can be a quick simplification to improving your drawing abilities and help even adept artists to nail elements that need a makeover.

So what causes a picture appear realistic and third-dimensional? There are three rules that add to the naturalistic outlook of your drawings. Every single one of them has to be mastered. Collectively they ensure near to perfect outcomes:

* Composition
* Perspective
* Illumination and Darknesses

Composition ...
...

Does composition really add to the three-dimensional appearing of your images? Of course! The three-dimensional outlook of any drawing is strongly influenced by the relationships between the different objects inside the drawing. You can create a drawing consisting of objects that all follow the rules of perspective and have ideally composed lighting and shadows. But a weak composition will spoil most of the three-dimensional effect.

There is only one important composition rule: let your picture's objects intersect! Often I see beginners averting to let elements in their pictures intersect , because they fear to mess it up.

Sure - if your drawing has many overlapping elements it gets more complicated to depict. There are more shadows also perspective and dimensions of the objects have to be a great deal more accurate.

That is challenging indeed. Closely composed elements in your picture will relentlessly uncover all weaknesses. On the other hand when you cope to get the perspective, lighting and shadows right, a closer arrangement will beef up the three-dimensional effect.

So take the bravery to put your drawing's elements nearer together. Allow them to intersect and show how good you are able to draw them following the rules of three-dimensional drawings.

Perspective

Producing a drawing employing accurate perspective is the moment where a little bit maths comes into play. Do not worry - no rocket science know-how, just drawing some additional lines.

When creating a drawing keeping the laws of perspective in mind you make sure that:
* your objects have the correct dimensions and size
* your objects have the correct distortion harmonizing with the viewer's distance
* your objects are arranged properly to one another

All this is achieved by following one small rule:

Objects and parts of them grow smaller the farther they are distant to the viewer.

This rule can't be emphasized enough. If you fail to apply it properly, your drawings will appear distorted and awkwardly. So drawing some additional lines will help you to apply this rule properly.

Light and Shadow

The correct lighting and shading is the third important principle for naturalistic appearing three-dimensional scenes. It is because of the lights in your drawings that shadows emerge. And shadows are necessary for a truthful appearing drawing - except you draw gray rainy day scenes only.

To craft naturalistic shadows there are some facts you've to consider:

* you must recognize where the light originates from
* so you can find out the right dimension of the shadow
* the right bearing and alignment for the shadow
* and the correct shape of the shadow

Unfortunately naturalistic shadows aren't that comfortable to create. But there are some useful techniques. Just in this moment I am working on a how-to explaining these methods step-by-step. It will follow here soon.
This is a first sketch of my conceptions on learning perspective drawing.
