If you are a beginner taking ballroom dancing lessons, you might be confused as to which style of dance to get started on. You need to know the differences between the many dancing styles such as international and American. This will enable you to choose the style that you think is right for you. These styles are available and are taught in ballroom dance classes or studios as well as by way of private dance lessons. There are also international dancing styles which are danced in competitions throughout the world. International dancing will introduce you to samba, Cha Cha and Rumba dance lessons among others.

In Cha cha dance lessons, you are taught to dance on a straight leg. This is also the case with Rumba where the weight transfer is entirely over the leg. The American version of this
which you can learn at Now ...
... & Then Dance Studios is slightly different since it is done on a bent leg. Styles here are danced with a flexed knee or bent leg. Here, the weight transfer is delayed until the beat has gone which is usually on particular counts. International Rumba dance lessons are taught with the slow on the 4-1 counts. The American version is taught with the slow on the 1-2 counts.

Ballroom dancing lessons on the international level are made up of fox trot, waltz, tango and quickstep. At Now & Then you can find Fox Trot dancing being offered. These dances are mainly in a closed position due to the fact that it is not danced socially. Instead they use a body contact closed position hold. The American version has many figures set in open positions and it can also be danced socially. It has a varying hold in body contact from between three to eight inches apart for a dancing couple.

In Cha cha dance lessons just as in the rest there will be a discrepancy in the timing of the slow counts. In smooth the slow is danced in count 1 while in the standard, the slow count is danced count 2. This is usually taught as beginner or bronze timing. Smooth silver and gold figures are advanced and are still danced on the slow count 1. Ballroom dancing lessons for Rumba, Bolero and Cha Cha among others enable you to master a group known as American Rhythm. They are also the main competition dances.

Then there are salsa dancing lessons which use the American Cuban motion, a technique that they share with mambo and Merengue. Basic Rumba dance lessons also introduce learners to this very technique. All these ballroom dancing styles come with a syllabus comprising of 10-15 figures. These figures are used for beginner, intermediate and advanced otherwise classified as bronze, silver and gold respectively. By learning these syllabus figures, you get to grasp basic elements such as ballroom dance elements and dance steps. These are elements that are put together into figures. When you dance the figures in a certain sequence, you end up with choreography.
