Zanzibar is made up of two main islands and fifty other islands in chains. The two main islands are called Unguja and Pemba and these two islands contain most of Zanzibar’s population. Zanzibar is famous for its beaches and one of the most famous towns called the Stone Town which also speaks highly about Zanzibar’s culture. It is an old place noted for its maze like winding streets and busy and noisy markets. It is one of the world’s heritage places.

Beaches

The warm blue waters and the white sands at the Zanzibar beaches are much inviting. These beaches have coral reefs for borders and have a lot of marine life in them. Zanzibar is a great place for scuba divers and snorkelers. Zanzibar is also a great place for retreat, especially the coral reefs and the other spots filled with lemon and tiger sharks and reef sharks. The whale shark and the white hammerheads sharks also flock the water in large numbers.

Time of visit

Zanzibar is open to the extremes of weather being located in the tropics. The temperature is around 25 degrees during summer. There ...
... is some bit of rain here but there is also a pretty good sunshine. This is a quiet time between June to October and if you prefer a quieter environment, you can visit the place during this time.

You can also visit Zanzibar between November and March but the weather conditions are very humid and there is much less rain. There is the Muslim festival of Ramadan and that time the restaurants may remain closed. Of course the resorts are open and you can still think of an umpteen number of things to do there in Zanzibar.

During the monsoon that is between April to June, you can visit the coast lines. It is very rainy during these months. During this period of time quite a few restaurants and resorts may remain closed but you can still avail of some good discounts at those that remain open. So if the rains are a welcome change to you, you can also visit Zanzibar during the monsoon.

The Sun

You should be aware of the exposure to the sun as the sun is usually very high and you would get tanned and burnt in minutes. People might underestimate the power of the sun and while on a tour to the place sunscreen lotions are a must.

The local culture

The Zanzibaris are a welcoming lot and they usually greet you with ‘Karibu’ which means welcome. The ladies cover their hair with a scarf as a mark of respect to people.

When you visit any place it is good to go out and meet the common people and gather information about how they make their living and how they spend their time. They speak the Swahili language and if you can join them in a few sentences in their mother tongue you sure would be catching up their spirit. Exploring is one thing you could do on the islands to learn more about the local people and their culture and get a whole crux of Zanzibar better.
