Even though they are significantly different from each other, both petrol and diesel engine require a steady and constant flow of air, to operate smoothly. This is usually done by, taking in air through the inner guard of the bonnet or from the one just behind the grill; in case the vehicle is not fitted with a snorkel. But these open-air passages, also allow water to seep in through to the engine, which causes extreme damage to the engine. This article lists the main reasons for the need to install a snorkel to a 4WD vehicle.

Why use a Suzuki Vitara Snorkel?

It is important that, the engine of any vehicle is supplied with clean air. There are severe consequences of driving the 4WD air system off road. Driving the vehicle in unnatural and extreme conditions like, deep-water bodies or on very dusty roads can cause damage to the engine, if proper air supply is not provided.

To explain in simple language, a snorkel is a raised air-intake system. A snorkel allows a vehicle to be completely submerged in water, given that the main air intake is free from any contact with water. A Suzuki Vitara snorkel is highly ...
... recommended equipment if one travels to the outback very often. Creek crossings, water crossings, torrential rains and flooding are a matter of great threat which also leads to the roads getting flooded in no time.

Snorkels also restrict the settlement of dust inside the engine and under the bonnet, by sucking air at the roof level which is cleaner that the one at ground level. This results in an intake of cool and clean air which in turn improves the working capacity of the air filter.

If water enters the engine, it has a negative impact on the performance of the engine and may also lead to a total engine failure. In cases involving diesel engines, this damage is very expensive to repair.

Water is incompressible and when it enters the chamber of the cylinder, it may cause harm and lead to the engine and diesel centrifuge getting stalled. Worst is, if it causes any bend to the connection rod. This damage is further aggravated to a great extent, when the compression ratios get higher. For instance, a low compression petrol engine is restarted easily by removing its plugs and cranking the starter motor, which causes the water to come out. But this process does not always work successfully. In cases of diesel engines with a high compression ratio of 20:01, water accumulated in the intake can have extreme consequences. The cost of repairing the damage, caused by even a small cup of water, can end up in thousands of dollars.

To clean air from harmful particles like dust and sand, all vehicles are fitted
with air filters. An air filter is the best defense for your engine. The important paper-based part of the filter, has to be replaced from time to time and this is usually done when the vehicle is sent for servicing. If the air-filter has gathered too much dust and is not replaced, it may result in poor performance of the engine and it may also develop some defect. The standard paper filter will gather more dirt, while travelling in the outback. Also, in some cases the gathered dust acts as an abrasive on the walls of the cylinder which further goes on to contaminate the oil in the engine.

If the diesel centrifuge and engine has a dirty air filter, it is a matter if great risk, as it is very important that the combustion chamber of the engine is supplied with clean air, smoothly and without any obstruction. Also, a diesel engine with a dirty air-filter has much more risks than a petrol engine. The injectors will continue to give out the same quantity of fuel and if the combustion chambers are not being supplied with enough air, it will result in a richer mix of diesel that will spark. This results in a heated burn in the combustion chamber, which is beyond the level of an ideal burn which has a negative impact on the engine.
