Free Things To Do In Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a beautiful city unlike any other, but if you want to explore it on a budget, it helps to find some fun yet free things to do in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was long a haven for pirates with a huge collection of small fishing villages until it returned to Chinese control in 1997, transforming into one of the biggest financial centers in the world and one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Asia. While Hong Kong shopping is certainly fun, here are some things to do in Hong Kong that won't require any money.
Museums and Cultural Centers
If you want to explore the culture of Hong Kong and learn more about its history and art, there are plenty of museums in the city that offer free admission, usually on Wednesdays. If you want to know what to do in Hong Kong that will actually help you understand the culture a bit more, and enjoy a relaxing day away from the crowds, this is it! The Hong Kong Museum of Art is a definite must-see with 15,000 pieces including calligraphy and Chinese paintings, while the Hong Kong Heritage Museum is a great place to see Hong Kong's very unique blend of Western and ...
... Eastern culture with toys, comic books and pop culture relics.
You can also try the Hong Kong Racing Museum that celebrates the history of the Hong Kong Jockey Club with guided tours available for free as well. Another great stop on your ideas for what to do in Hong Kong: the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum. This museum is all about this revolutionary who helped to overthrow the Qing Dynasty.
Fun Attractions in Hong Kong
There are also a few attractions with free admission to enjoy. One great example is the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, with over 1,500 species of birds, animals and plants, from flamingos to orangutans. Be sure to head to Victoria Harbour by 8:00 pm to view A Symphony of Lights, which is held on its shores every night. It's named as the World's Largest Permanent Light and Sound Show by the Guinness Book of World Records and includes a magnificent show with searchlights, lasers and pyrotechnics. Once the show is over, you can check out some great Hong Kong restaurants along the shore. If you visit on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, the narration is in English.
Great Hong Kong Restaurants
Before you check out some of the best restaurants in Hong Kong, read up on Chinese tea appreciation and then head to the Museum of Tea Ware to view a massive collection of rare teapots. You can register for Chinese tea appreciation classes for free by visiting one of the Hong Kong Tourism Board Visitor Centres during your stay.
The Great Outdoors
Finally, what's a trip to Hong Kong without appreciating its natural beauty? Of all the things to do in Hong Kong, this is one that you should not skip. Hong Kong has some of the world's most beautiful beaches that are always free, including the Golden Beach and Repulse Bay where you can soak in the sun or swim. If you'd like to take in some surfing, check out Big Wave Bay Beach, where you can also view prehistoric rock carvings.
