What Is A Fiberglass Flagpole?
Everyone is used to seeing flagpoles in prominent places, whether it be schools and other government buildings, businesses or private homes. Most of us pay little or no attention to what the flagpoles are made of. If asked we would probably reply that a flagpole is made of aluminum or steel, but we really don't know. The fact is there are real differences in the types of flagpoles, with compelling arguments that the best flagpoles are those made with a material you might not think of - fiberglass.
While all flagpoles have the virtue of being able to hold a flag, by no means are all flagpoles created equal. Flagpoles are outside all the time, which means they are exposed to every kind of potential damage by the weather. They are especially challenged by high winds, since the flag flying from the pole acts much like the sail on a boat that catches the wind. Metal poles lack the flexibility to bend slightly with the wind, thereby increasing the possibility that the pole will bend or even snap in two. However, fiberglass flagpoles do have a little give to them, making it possible for them to withstand winds that traditional ...
... flagpoles cannot.
Metal flagpoles are also prone to deterioration from natural factors other than the wind. They can rust, fade under repeated exposure to the sun and rain, or deteriorate due to moisture. Fiberglass flagpoles are immune to all of these problems. Another advantage to fiberglass flagpoles is that they require less maintenance because they never need to be painted or otherwise treated with preservative finishes.
A fiberglass flagpole is also quieter. Wind often causes the flag and the rope holding it to knock against the pole, causing a surprisingly loud racket on a windy day. But when the rope or flag hits fiberglass instead of metal, the sound is much lower in volume. There is also a safety factor to consider. Metal poles sticking up in the air can attract lightning bolts that can potentially damage the pole and surrounding buildings. Poles made of fiberglass are not conductors of electricity.
In terms of appearance, practicality, endurance and safety, fiberglass flagpoles simply do not have the drawbacks that other kinds of poles do. The bottom line is that a fiberglass flagpole will outlast and outperform any other kind. Flying your flag should not be a major hassle, so buying a fiberglass flagpole is something that every patriot should consider
